There's No Such Thing as Just One Ornament

Pick a favorite. Then accept that "just one" was never really an option.

The best whale gifts acknowledge scale, and the Whale with Presents Ornament does: a hand-painted glass whale ferrying a stack of wrapped packages across 3.94 inches of length, 2.76 inches of width, and 3.15 inches of height. Glassworkers shape the body freehand at the flame, add the parcels while everything is still hot enough to fuse, and paint the blue gradients and ribbon details in stages afterward. The premise here is that something enormous and far away is bringing you things because it thought of you, which is the holiday season stated as plainly as it can be stated. My uncle Bram lived three time zones away and still remembered every occasion, usually with something too big for the mailbox. The whale is for people like him. The whale makes the effort. It has the gentle absurdist charm of a TIFF short-film program, the kind you leave smiling without quite knowing why.

The Story Behind This Ornament

My uncle Bram lived three time zones away for most of my childhood, which should have made him a rumor and instead made him an event. He remembered every birthday, every graduation, every mediocre piano recital, and the packages arrived early and enormous, wrapped in paper he had very clearly chosen with intent. The year I turned nine he shipped a telescope in a crate the delivery man had to walk up the driveway sideways. My mother said Bram overdid it. Bram, reached by phone, said the whole point of being far away is that you get to arrive in large form. When we designed this whale, packages stacked on its back, crossing implausible distances because it thought of someone, I sent him the first one off the line. He called and was quiet for a moment and then said, that is me, that is what I have been doing, and I said I know, that is why I sent it. He hangs it where the tree lights catch the parcels. The logistics of a whale delivering presents do not survive scrutiny. Neither does love, frankly. Both keep arriving anyway. Bram turns eighty this year. The package is already enormous.

Care Tips

Storage Do’s and Don’ts:

(Because Yes, They’re Fragile)

  • Do wrap each ornament individually in soft tissue paper, bubble wrap, or a gentle cloth. (No, shoving them in a shoebox with tinsel does not count.)
  • Don’t let them clink around in a box together. That’s a recipe for heartbreak and glittery shards.
  • Do store them in a sturdy container (plastic bins with dividers = chef’s kiss) and keep it in a cool, dry place — no attics or sketchy basements, please.

Pro Tip: Label the box like your life depends on it.

Write it on every side, not just the top, since nobody unloading a truck reads the top first. If you're storing these for next year, do future you a favor and note what's inside beyond just "ornaments." A little specificity now saves a lot of bubble wrap archaeology in eleven months.

Ornaments Are a Great Gift. We Have Opinions About the Rest.

More Animal Christmas Ornaments

Our Animal collection is a census of the creatures who actually run our households, taken in hand-painted glass. The whale travels well beside the Sea Turtle Ornament, another patient long-hauler.

Hand-Blown Glass Christmas Ornaments

Hand-painted glass rewards the close look, and every Chive ornament is made to be inspected at arm's length — the distance where trees are actually enjoyed. Meet the whole menagerie in our Animal christmas ornaments, where each creature gets both the anatomical respect and the sense of humor it properly deserves.

Ceramic Flowers That Never Wilt

Bram's packages do not stop in December, and neither do ours. Chive's original line of ceramic flowers crosses the same distances as the whale — a glazed bloom arrives intact, sits wherever it lands, and never needs water while it waits for the next visit. He shipped a pair of them to my mother the year she repainted her kitchen, and they matched the new walls exactly. He claims that was luck. Nobody believes him either.

About Chive Studio

A surprising amount of what we make travels a very long way, and since 2004 we have packed every box on the theory that distance is not an excuse. Chive grew from a single ceramic flower design into a studio whose work now hangs on trees and sits on shelves across several continents, and the far-away orders get the same triple-checking as the local ones, possibly more, out of sympathy. We like objects that make the effort, that cross implausible distances intact because someone thought of someone else. It is, more or less, our entire business model. The glass is inspected twice before it leaves. The third inspection is the recipient's. We have arranged things so that one goes well too.

Frequently asked questions

What are the best whale gifts this christmas?

The best whale gifts capture the scale and the gentleness at once, and a hand-painted glass whale carrying wrapped presents manages both. I sent the first one off our line to my uncle Bram, the family's champion of long-distance generosity, and he recognized himself immediately over the phone. It suits anyone who makes the effort from far away. The whale reliably delivers. So do they.

Would the Whale with Presents ornament win a white elephant exchange?

It would, by the oldest white elephant maneuver there is: it unwraps as a joke and lands as the nicest object on the table. Bram took one to his marina club exchange, the room laughed at the premise, then someone noticed the brushwork on the parcels and the tone changed entirely. Jokes with craftsmanship win those evenings. His certainly did.

Is the Whale with Presents ornament a good gift idea?

Yes — it is practically a thesis statement about gifts: something large and far away thought of you and made the trip anyway. Bram, who has been that something for forty years, says the ornament spares him the annual difficulty of explaining himself. Give it to your family's long-distance rememberer. They will understand it instantly.

What is the Whale with Presents ornament made from?

Hand-blown glass, shaped freehand at the flame, with the wrapped parcels fused on while everything is still hot and the blue gradients painted in stages afterward. When Bram asked how the packages stay on, I told him they are permanently attached, and he said that was the most reliable delivery arrangement he had ever heard of. The whole piece is one continuous act of glasswork. No glue, no shortcuts.

What size is the Whale with Presents ornament out of the box?

It measures 3.94 inches long, 2.76 inches wide, and 3.15 inches tall — substantial, as befits the premise. Most of the visual weight is the parcel stack, which Bram says is the part every guest photographs first. It hangs easily from a standard branch despite the cargo. Whales carry well.

How do I keep the Whale with Presents ornament safe in storage?

Wrap the whale in soft tissue, cushion the parcel stack especially, and rest it in a lidded box away from temperature swings. Bram packs his in the crate lining left over from a telescope he shipped me in 1994, completing a circle neither of us planned. Padding above, padding below, nothing pressing on the fins. It will winter beautifully.

Do you have more animal ornaments like the Whale with Presents?

A whole pod — our Animal christmas ornaments include the Sea Turtle, the Unicorn Pink, and a full roster of creatures painted with the same layered care as the whale. Bram is assembling what he calls the aquarium wing on the seaward side of his tree, one species per year. The whale started it, as whales tend to do. The pod keeps growing.

Does the Whale with Presents ornament ship gift ready?

It ships in secure protective transit packaging rather than a gift box, so the glass arrives flawless and the wrapping stays your call. Bram, a career gift-shipper with strong opinions, rates our packing as excessive, which from him is the highest available praise. The parcels on its back arrive exactly as painted, every last one. The whale arrives intact, always.

A Promise Fresh Flowers Can't Keep

Fresh flowers make a promise they cannot keep. A Chive ceramic flower skips the wilting and arrives with the kind of presence that suggests someone spent real time choosing it, whether or not that is true. No water. No sunlight. No expiration date to plan around.
