There's No Such Thing as Just One Ornament

Pick a favorite. Then accept that "just one" was never really an option.

Among whiskey gifts that actually say something, the Whiskey Ornament says it in hand-blown glass: an amber bottle shaped over the flame, hand-painted with the color of a pour that cost more than you planned and was completely worth it. Metal cap, hanging loop, sized for a standard branch. My uncle Frank kept a bottle of bourbon on the mantel for eleven years because he said it was too good to open, which meant it was too good to stop looking at. It became décor. Frank became a man with an expensive centerpiece and no regrets and no bourbon, technically, because the bourbon was still in there — sealed, warm, admired, untouched. The whiskey person in your life has a version of this story. They have a preferred glass shape. They have feelings about ice that they share at the exact moment nobody asked. This ornament holds their position on the matter, at a scale the Royal Ontario Museum would file under miniature studies in devotion.

The Story Behind This Ornament

The whiskey person and the gin person have been conducting the same argument since approximately 1823 and neither party intends to yield, which is fine because the argument was never really about the drink. It was about identity. The whiskey person knows what kind of person they are and they have known it since the first sip that tasted like caramel and oak and a decision they were never going to revisit. My uncle Frank was this person. He kept a bottle on the mantel where most people keep photographs and when guests asked about it he said it was an investment, by which he meant it was a mirror, by which he meant it showed him exactly who he was every time he walked past it. He never opened the bottle. Eleven years it sat there. The seal intact, the color deepening in afternoon light, the bourbon aging inside a room that was also aging, both of them doing it patiently. Frank died in 2016 and my aunt left the bottle on the mantel because she said taking it down felt like editing. This ornament occupies the same role at a smaller scale: a glass object that holds a preference in place and does not require explanation.

Care Tips

Storage Do’s and Don’ts:

(Because Yes, They’re Fragile)

  • Do wrap each ornament individually in soft tissue paper, bubble wrap, or a gentle cloth. (No, shoving them in a shoebox with tinsel does not count.)
  • Don’t let them clink around in a box together. That’s a recipe for heartbreak and glittery shards.
  • Do store them in a sturdy container (plastic bins with dividers = chef’s kiss) and keep it in a cool, dry place — no attics or sketchy basements, please.

Pro Tip: Label the box like your life depends on it.

Write it on every side, not just the top, since nobody unloading a truck reads the top first. If you're storing these for next year, do future you a favor and note what's inside beyond just "ornaments." A little specificity now saves a lot of bubble wrap archaeology in eleven months.

Ceramic Flowers That Never Wilt

If the tree gets a Whiskey Ornament in December, the walls deserve something equally permanent the other eleven months. Chive's Ceramic Flowers are hand-crafted porcelain blooms that mount flat, never need water, and hold color year after year in a way that real petals abandoned long ago. They pair with the ornament collection because both start as raw material shaped by hand and end as objects people keep without being asked to.

About Chive Studio

Chive has been designing hand-blown glass ornaments since 2004, which in ornament years is roughly the equivalent of a barrel-aged reserve — not the oldest on the shelf but old enough to know what it is doing. We started with ceramic flowers and discovered that people who care about the objects on their walls also care about the objects on their trees, which should have been obvious but required a few dozen prototypes and one extremely honest friend to confirm. Every ornament is mouth-blown by artisans, hand-painted with a steady grip and a questionable playlist, and finished with a metal cap and hanging loop. We do not mass-produce. We do not cut corners on the things that matter. We employ people whose hands know the glass the way Frank knew the bourbon on his mantel — by memory, by repetition, by refusal to rush the work.

Frequently asked questions

What are some truly original whiskey gifts this year?

Original whiskey gifts start where the expected ones stop, and a hand-blown glass Whiskey Ornament is about as far from a gift card as you can travel without leaving the internet. It is a glass bottle shaped by breath, painted in bourbon amber, and designed to hang on a tree for decades. My uncle Frank would have approved immediately and without reservation.

Would the Whiskey ornament make a great secret santa pick?

A Whiskey Ornament at a secret santa exchange announces your taste without revealing your budget, which is the ideal ratio for office gift-giving. It is hand-blown glass, it fits in one hand, and it communicates that you paid attention to whoever drew the name. Frank brought bourbon to a gift exchange once and was remembered for years. This achieves the same result at a lower proof.

Who should I buy the Whiskey ornament for?

Buy it for the person who has a preferred glass shape and opinions about ice that arrive unprompted at dinner parties. The bourbon enthusiast, the rye loyalist, the person whose home bar has its own lighting. If someone in your life has ever described a whiskey as having notes of anything, this ornament is already theirs. They simply have not received it yet.

How is the Whiskey glass ornament actually made?

An artisan gathers molten glass on a blowpipe and shapes the bottle by breath and gravity while the material is still hot enough to move. Once cooled, a painter applies the amber color by hand. A metal cap and hanging loop are attached at the finish. The whole process happens in a studio, not a factory. The glass makes the distinction visible.

What are the dimensions of the Whiskey ornament?

The Whiskey Ornament measures 1.38 inches in diameter and 4.53 inches tall, which makes it roughly the size of an actual miniature bottle minus the contents and plus a hanging loop. It holds a solid branch comfortably without tipping forward or crowding its neighbors. Frank would note that good bourbon also benefits from breathing room.

How do I clean and care for the Whiskey ornament?

Wipe gently with a dry microfiber cloth after the season ends and before storing. Avoid water, solvents, and anything abrasive that might cloud the painted finish. Store it wrapped in tissue inside a rigid box, ideally somewhere temperature-stable. Treat it the way Frank treated the bourbon on his mantel: with quiet attention. No sudden movements needed.

What food and drink ornaments pair well with the Whiskey?

The Whiskey Ornament fits naturally alongside any of the Food & Drink Christmas Ornaments in our collection. A glass cocktail next to a glass burger next to a glass bottle creates the kind of miniature menu that makes a tree feel curated rather than accumulated. Start with the Whiskey and let the rest of the shelf follow.

Does the Whiskey ornament ship in protective gift packaging?

The Whiskey Ornament does not ship in a presentation gift box — it ships in secure protective packaging engineered to absorb transit shock and deliver the glass unbroken. If you are giving it as a gift, you handle the wrapping yourself. That way you skip unwrapping ours just to rewrap it in yours.

A Promise Fresh Flowers Can't Keep

Fresh flowers make a promise they cannot keep. A Chive ceramic flower skips the wilting and arrives with the kind of presence that suggests someone spent real time choosing it, whether or not that is true. No water. No sunlight. No expiration date to plan around.
