Build Your Floral Wall With These:

Designed to cluster naturally, like a wild garden. Choose a flower as your design anchor, then grow your custom floral wall with these companions:

Blue brown is the color of a November landscape at dusk — earthy from one angle, cool from another, different at four in the afternoon than it was at ten in the morning. The Blue Brown Hawthorn is a ceramic wall flower, 5 inches across, one screw, no water. The hawthorn had no business arriving at this color and arrived at it anyway. The form reads as atmospherically unresolved in the best possible sense, which is what you want from something that blooms along the edges of places where things change. The hawthorn cannot argue with the result.

How to hang & display

Wall hanging

Works on drywall, plaster, or wood panelling. Drive a small screw at a slight upward angle, leaving the head proud of the wall. Slide the keyhole slot on the back over the screw head, adjust to level. Sits flush — no visible hardware.

No stud? No problem. A drywall anchor rated for the weight works fine.

Displaying a collection

Lay everything out on the floor first. Start with your anchor piece, build outward. Keep 2–3 inches between each piece and aim for the centre of the whole arrangement to land around eye level. Use painter's tape on the wall to map positions before committing to any screws.

Table & shelf display: Equally beautiful propped on a shelf, mantle, or side table. Pair with books, candles, or a small pot.

The Story Behind This Piece

Hawthorn blooms in tight, small clusters in the wild, five petals apiece, and we kept that true to scale rather than blowing the individual flowers up the way we sometimes do for wall impact. That decision meant the two-tone glaze test mattered more than usual, since there was very little surface per bloom to prove the color combination worked. Blue and brown together was not an obvious pairing going in. We tested a hard split between the two colors first, and it read as two separate flowers glued together rather than one considered piece. Softening the transition so the brown bled slightly into the blue at the base of each petal was what finally made the cluster read as a single color decision instead of an argument between two glazes. The finished piece changes noticeably between morning and afternoon light, which was not something we planned for, only noticed after the first test batch sat on a windowsill for a week. We decided that was a feature worth keeping rather than a glaze inconsistency worth correcting.

Part of the Japan Collection

The Japan collection learned its patience from rooms built around one object instead of a crowded shelf — an off-center bloom, an asymmetrical bract, a glaze left looking unfinished. Every piece trades abundance for one flower a room needs. The Blue Brown Hawthorn clusters its small blooms tightly, a two-tone glaze that reads differently depending on which petal catches the light. A two-toned hawthorn picks up a related contrast.

Two Ways to Display

Every Chive ceramic flower works two ways: mounted vertically as a growing gallery wall, or laid flat as a no-water tablescape. The Blue Brown Hawthorn's tightly clustered blooms catch that shifting two-tone glaze most dramatically mounted upright, where morning and afternoon light change the color the way the museum piece does, and read as a denser, quieter cluster laid flat among other pieces. Either way the glaze keeps shifting with the light, never with the piece itself. Shop the full Japan Collection.

Complete the Look

A Hedgehog Ceramic Pot nearby gives an actual small plant the shelter this fired hawthorn cluster was never built to need, though like the hawthorn it skips a drainage hole and asks for a liner instead. Both pieces share the same instinct for a little personality on a crowded shelf. Shop the Hedgehog Ceramic Pot.

About Chive Ceramics Studio

Chive has been testing color combinations against small-format flowers since 2004, and a five-petal cluster this size leaves almost no room to hide an unconvincing pairing. Two-tone glazes in particular expose bad decisions quickly, since the transition line between colors has to look intentional rather than accidental at close range. The studio has learned to distrust a color combination that looks good on a test tile but has never been fired onto an actual flower shape, since clay behaves differently than a flat sample. Twenty years of that specific lesson is why blue and brown, an unlikely pairing on paper, made it into permanent rotation rather than getting quietly shelved after one test run.

Frequently asked questions

How does the Blue Brown Hawthorn hang on the wall?

The Blue Brown Hawthorn hangs on a single screw using the keyhole mount on the back. Screw, wall anchor, and instructions are included. Installation takes about ninety seconds. The mount sits flush against the wall. No visible hardware. It can be repositioned without wall damage

What does a hawthorn flower mean?

The hawthorn carries meanings of hope, protection, and the transition between states -- in Celtic tradition it was the boundary plant, planted at the edges of fields and villages as both a physical barrier and a spiritual one. In Japanese botanical tradition the hawthorn arrived as an imported shrub and was appreciated for its structure rather than its symbolism. Blue brown captures something of the hawthorn's boundary quality -- a color that sits at the edge between two things and refuses to resolve

Is the Blue Brown Hawthorn good living room wall decor?

The Blue Brown Hawthorn is a strong choice for living room wall decor. The blue brown glaze is atmospheric and unusual -- it reads as earthy from one angle and cool from another, which means it responds differently to different light conditions throughout the day. The hawthorn form is botanical and specific. For a living room that wants one wall piece that rewards looking at it from different positions at different times, the Blue Brown Hawthorn is that piece

What room suits the Blue Brown Hawthorn?

The Blue Brown Hawthorn works particularly well in living rooms, dining rooms, and home offices -- rooms where the shift between blue and brown reads as atmospheric rather than indecisive. The glaze sits well against warm white, putty, and soft grey walls. The San Diego Museum of Art carries Chive ceramics, which places the piece in a context that evaluates color decisions against a high standard

What style does the Blue Brown Hawthorn suit?

The Blue Brown Hawthorn suits organic modern, wabi-sabi, and Japandi interiors particularly well -- the earthy blue quality of the glaze reads as natural and considered, and the hawthorn form is botanical without being conventional. It also works in interiors that favor warm neutrals with one cooler accent, where the blue in the blue brown provides that accent without committing to a straight blue

Is the Blue Brown Hawthorn a good gift for someone who loves moody interiors?

The Blue Brown Hawthorn is an excellent gift for someone who gravitates toward moody interiors. The blue brown glaze is atmospheric -- it carries both the warmth of earth and the depth of blue. For a room that favors depth over brightness and considers the quality of light in a space before making a color decision, the Blue Brown Hawthorn is a gift that confirms the recipient's aesthetic was correct

Does the Blue Brown Hawthorn ship gift-ready?

The Blue Brown Hawthorn ships in a gift box included with purchase. No additional wrapping needed. Ships to over forty countries. The box is designed to be given directly

Has anyone looked at the Blue Brown Hawthorn and asked which color it is, exactly?

Regularly. The answer is both, simultaneously, and the exact proportion depends on the light in the room and the time of day. The San Diego Museum of Art, which carries this piece, is in a city with excellent light and has confirmed that the question continues to be interesting at all times of day
