Buttercup Yellow Elegance Ranunculus

A diagnostic test so charming no one has questioned it in centuries.

Regular price $27.15

The word buttercup exists solely to describe the specific yellow of a flower held under a child's chin to determine whether they like butter, which is a diagnostic test so charming and so completely useless that we think about it more than is probably healthy. The Buttercup Yellow Elegance Ranunculus has claimed this color across all one hundred of its layered petals and made it the warmest, most abundantly cheerful thing in any room it occupies. 3.5 inches across. One screw. No water. The cheerfulness is structural and will not negotiate.

How to hang & display

Wall hanging

Works on drywall, plaster, or wood panelling. Drive a small screw at a slight upward angle, leaving the head proud of the wall. Slide the keyhole slot on the back over the screw head, adjust to level. Sits flush — no visible hardware.

No stud? No problem. A drywall anchor rated for the weight works fine.

Displaying a collection

Lay everything out on the floor first. Start with your anchor piece, build outward. Keep 2–3 inches between each piece and aim for the centre of the whole arrangement to land around eye level. Use painter's tape on the wall to map positions before committing to any screws.

Table & shelf display: Equally beautiful propped on a shelf, mantle, or side table. Pair with books, candles, or a small pot.

One Hundred Petals, One Decision About Yellow

The word buttercup exists in the English language solely to describe the specific yellow of a flower held under a child's chin to determine whether they like butter, which is a diagnostic test so charming and so completely useless that we think about it more than is probably healthy. We made a ranunculus this color. One hundred petals, all buttercup yellow, all completely committed.

This is the thing about buttercup yellow on a ceramic surface: it is the warmest, most abundantly cheerful thing in any room it occupies, and the room does not get a vote. We made it ceramic. The cheerfulness is now structural. The butter test is no longer necessary.

Scandi interiors that needed one warm thing

Scandi interiors are built on restraint — clean lines, natural materials, a careful absence of objects that do not earn their place. The Buttercup Yellow Elegance Ranunculus earns its place. One hundred petals in the warmest yellow available, on a wall that has been edited down to the things that matter. It is the one warm thing in a room that has been very considered about warmth.

It works with white walls, light wood, linen, and the pared-back objects of a Scandinavian interior without fighting the aesthetic. It is a single committed color in a room that knows the value of a single committed color. We made it ceramic. The warmth is now structural and does not require maintenance.

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take to hang a ceramic flower on the wall?

About ninety seconds. The buttercup yellow Elegance Ranunculus has a keyhole mount on the back — you put a screw in the wall, hang the keyhole over it, and you are done. No drill required for most walls. No bracket, no frame, no level required if your eye is reasonably reliable. The flower hangs flat against the wall and stays there. We have been building them this way since 1999 and the system has never needed an update, which is the highest possible endorsement of a hanging system.

What does a ranunculus flower mean?

The ranunculus means charm, radiance, and the particular quality of attractiveness that comes from an abundance of small beautiful things arranged into something greater than any of them individually. It has been used in wedding arrangements and garden borders for centuries on the basis of this quality. The Elegance Ranunculus pushes this further: more petals, more layering, more of the quality the ranunculus was already known for. In buttercup yellow, it has claimed the color that most directly communicates pure cheerful warmth without any ambiguity at all.

What is a teacher appreciation gift that is not food?

Teachers receive a significant volume of food in their professional lives and have developed opinions about it. The Buttercup Yellow Elegance Ranunculus is a teacher appreciation gift that is not food and will not expire. It is handmade ceramic from a studio that has been making things since 1999. It is in the collection of the Utah Museum of Fine Arts. It hangs on a screw, arrives gift-ready, and will be on the classroom or home wall for considerably longer than the school year it was given to mark. This is a gift that improves the room it goes into, which is a reasonable description of a good teacher.

What is a good 9th anniversary ceramic gift?

The ninth anniversary is traditionally associated with pottery and willow, which gives us the ceramic angle and confirms that whoever established these traditions had good instincts. The Buttercup Yellow Elegance Ranunculus is handmade ceramic — designed in Toronto, made by hand since 1999, in the collection of the Utah Museum of Fine Arts. It is a ninth anniversary gift that is both literally correct on the pottery criterion and considerably better-looking than pottery is expected to be. It ships gift-ready. The buttercup yellow is the kind of color that reads as chosen rather than defaulted to, which is exactly right for nine years.

What wall art works on a staircase wall?

The staircase wall is one of the most useful and most underused walls in a house. It is seen from multiple heights and angles, which means it rewards objects that are resolved from every direction. The Buttercup Yellow Elegance Ranunculus is a ceramic sculpture as much as it is a wall flower — the layered petal form reads interestingly from below, from the side, and at eye level. A single flower on the staircase wall is a complete installation. Multiple flowers at staggered heights, following the stair line, is a considered arrangement that most galleries would not object to.

Does ceramic wall decor suit scandi interiors?

Scandi interiors are built on considered restraint — clean lines, specific materials, warmth through texture rather than pattern. The Buttercup Yellow Elegance Ranunculus works in a scandi interior because it is a resolved form: the layering is dense but the overall shape is circular and balanced. The buttercup yellow is warm without being loud in the way scandi palettes are warm without being loud. One flower on a white wall is a scandi arrangement. Three flowers in a considered cluster is a scandi gallery. The ceramic material reads as the kind of carefully chosen object a scandi interior expects from its walls.

Does the ranunculus come in a gift box?

The Buttercup Yellow Elegance Ranunculus ships in Chive packaging — a box sized for the flower, with tissue, ready to give. It does not need additional wrapping. The packaging has been designed to arrive looking like a gift rather than a shipment, which is a distinction that matters when it goes directly to the recipient. The flower inside is the argument for the gift. The packaging supports that argument without undermining it.

Is there a scientific basis for the butter test?

The butter test — holding a buttercup under a child's chin to determine whether they like butter by observing the yellow reflection on their skin — reflects light universally, not selectively. Everyone reflects yellow under a buttercup. The diagnostic accuracy is therefore zero percent. We have thought about this considerably. The Buttercup Yellow Elegance Ranunculus reflects a similar shade on most surfaces, and we have chosen to frame this as generosity rather than imprecision.
