Build Your Floral Wall With These:

Designed to cluster naturally, like a wild garden. Choose a flower as your design anchor, then grow your custom floral wall with these companions:

Great star coral builds broad mounds on Caribbean reefs, each one covered in round, raised cups that each house a single polyp. It is usually brown, green or grey, and it does not usually get described as cheerful. The Buttercup Yellow Great Star is the exception. The piece is 4.5 inches wide and 2 inches deep, made of glazed ceramic, with a central star surrounded by raised cups, glazed in a soft, warm yellow. One screw holds it up, water never enters the picture, and it brightens a wall in roughly the time it takes to find a screwdriver.

How to hang & display

Wall hanging

Works on drywall, plaster, or wood panelling. Drive a small screw at a slight upward angle, leaving the head proud of the wall. Slide the keyhole slot on the back over the screw head, adjust to level. Sits flush — no visible hardware.

No stud? No problem. A drywall anchor rated for the weight works fine.

Displaying a collection

Lay everything out on the floor first. Start with your anchor piece, build outward. Keep 2–3 inches between each piece and aim for the centre of the whole arrangement to land around eye level. Use painter's tape on the wall to map positions before committing to any screws.

Table & shelf display: Equally beautiful propped on a shelf, mantle, or side table. Pair with books, candles, or a small pot.

Finding the Right Yellow

Great star coral grows in broad mounds covered in round, raised cups, each one home to a single polyp. We built this piece around those cups, a central star with a ring of raised forms that echo it, so the surface has the same repeating rhythm as the real colony without becoming busy. Buttercup yellow was chosen after the shape was settled. The real coral leans brown, green and grey, and a soft yellow lifted the form out of the reef and into a room. We tested several yellows before this one. Brighter versions looked like plastic and paler ones went flat. Buttercup sits in the middle, warm enough to feel cheerful and soft enough that the raised cups still cast visible shadows across the glaze.

Designed to Share the Same Room

One Form, Two Moods

Buttercup yellow makes this the sunniest piece in the collection. The great star form also comes in pewter blue, and seeing the two together is the clearest demonstration of how far one shape can travel between a warm glaze and a cool one.

Explore the Pewter Blue Great Star.

Displayed Two Ways

On a wall, each raised cup throws a small round shadow and the star reads crisply. Laid on a kitchen counter or breakfast table, it becomes a low, cheerful centerpiece that never wilts. Shop the Coral Collection.

Yellow on Yellow

A Tika Pot and Saucer in Meadowlark Yellow makes a bright gift beside it, a small pot with drainage for the living plant this coral was never built to hold. The two yellows warm up the same shelf without looking like a set. Shop the Tika Pot and Saucer.

Related, Not Identical

Repetition is a quiet test of handwork, and Chive has been designing around it since 2004. Machine-perfect rows look stiff, and rows that wander too much look careless. The aim is the narrow space between, where each raised cup on the great star is clearly related to its neighbors without being identical to them. That small variation is the reason no two pieces in the Coral collection are exactly alike. Choosing yellow for a coral that rarely wears it followed the same thinking: keep the form faithful to the animal, and let the color serve the room the piece will hang in.

Frequently asked questions

What is great star coral?

Great star coral, Montastraea cavernosa, is a reef-building stony coral found in the Caribbean and western Atlantic. It forms large mounds covered in round, raised polyps that look like small stars. The Buttercup Yellow Great Star condenses that pattern into one wall piece

Is the Buttercup Yellow Great Star a good birthday gift?

Yes. It is bright, cheerful and easy to place, and it arrives in a gift box with the hanging hardware included. Yellow also suits nearly any season, so it never feels like a gift tied to a particular month

Can I put it in a kitchen?

Kitchens are one of the best places for it. The yellow suits white cabinets and wood counters, and a wipe with a damp cloth clears any cooking film from the glaze

Will yellow clash with my other decor?

Buttercup is a soft, warm yellow rather than a lemon, so it works with whites, greys, navy, green and wood. It only struggles beside other strong yellows, where the two compete

How does it attach to the wall?

Through a keyhole slot on the back that fits over one screw. The kit includes an anchor and instructions, and the back sits flush

What is the difference between this and the Pewter Blue Great Star?

The form is the same; the glaze changes everything else. Buttercup yellow reads playful and warm, while pewter blue reads cooler and more architectural. Some people hang both side by side

Is it heavy?

No. It is a light ceramic piece that a single screw and anchor hold securely in standard drywall

Does it know great star coral is usually brown?

It is aware, and it has chosen not to dwell on it
