At 4.5 inches across and 2 inches deep, this ceramic star wears a grey-leaning blue named for the metal, with a ring of raised cups around a central star. How to hang & display

Wall hanging

Works on drywall, plaster, or wood panelling. Drive a small screw at a slight upward angle, leaving the head proud of the wall. Slide the keyhole slot on the back over the screw head, adjust to level. Sits flush — no visible hardware.

No stud? No problem. A drywall anchor rated for the weight works fine.

Displaying a collection

Lay everything out on the floor first. Start with your anchor piece, build outward. Keep 2–3 inches between each piece and aim for the centre of the whole arrangement to land around eye level. Use painter's tape on the wall to map positions before committing to any screws.

The Deeper-Water Version

The great star form appears twice in the Coral collection, and the pewter blue version was glazed to show how much a color can change a piece. In yellow the raised cups feel playful. In pewter blue they read cooler and more architectural, closer to how great star coral looks in deeper water where the light thins out. Pewter is a grey-leaning blue named for the metal, and it took careful testing to keep it from turning dull. The glaze needed enough depth to pool around the base of each raised cup and enough brightness along the ridges to keep the star readable. It works best in rooms that already lean cool, with grey, white or navy walls, where it reads as quiet and deliberate.

Earning a Second Color

Making the same form in more than one color has been part of Chive's practice since 2004, and each version is treated as its own piece rather than a recolor. A glaze changes how a shape reads, which shadows matter, and which rooms it belongs in. On the pewter blue great star, the cooler color made the raised cups look more structured, so the shaping was tightened slightly to suit it. That kind of adjustment is invisible unless the two versions hang side by side, and it is part of why a pair from the same form often ends up on the same wall.
