Scroll coral grows in thin plates that curl back on themselves, like paper left near a radiator. On a reef it tends toward yellow-green or brown. The Champagne Pink Scroll Coral has taken a different view. This glazed ceramic coral measures 4.25 inches across by 2 inches deep, with tapered, curling plates glazed in a soft blush that deepens inside every fold. It hangs from one screw and needs no water. Up close it looks rather like a rose that considered its options and chose to become a coral instead.

How to hang & display

Wall hanging

Works on drywall, plaster, or wood panelling. Drive a small screw at a slight upward angle, leaving the head proud of the wall. Slide the keyhole slot on the back over the screw head, adjust to level. Sits flush — no visible hardware.

No stud? No problem. A drywall anchor rated for the weight works fine.

Displaying a collection

Lay everything out on the floor first. Start with your anchor piece, build outward. Keep 2–3 inches between each piece and aim for the centre of the whole arrangement to land around eye level. Use painter's tape on the wall to map positions before committing to any screws.

Table & shelf display: Equally beautiful propped on a shelf, mantle, or side table. Pair with books, candles, or a small pot.

Thin Enough to Curl

Scroll coral grows in thin plates that curl back on themselves as they spread, and on a reef it usually comes in yellow-green or brown. We kept the curl and dropped the reef color entirely. The challenge with this form was thickness: the plates had to be thin enough to read as curling paper rather than heavy slabs, but sturdy enough to survive shipping and years on a wall. Early versions erred on both sides. The final shaping lets each plate taper toward its edge, so the curl looks light without actually being fragile. Champagne pink suited the form because the glaze gathers slightly deeper inside each fold and stays paler along the rims, which traces the scroll without any added detail.

The Taper That Fixed It

Thin, curving edges have been part of Chive's work in clay since 2004, and the list of forms that looked better as a sketch than as a finished piece is a long one. Curling plates sit near the top of that list, since clay that is too thin warps and clay that is too thick looks like it never wanted to curl. The fix on the scroll coral was a taper, thicker where each plate meets the center and fine at the rim, which keeps the movement while giving the piece the strength to ship safely. The glaze finishes the job, pooling in the folds and thinning at the edges so the scroll stays legible on the wall.
