Candy cane coral grows as clusters of round heads at the ends of short branches, each head striped along its sides like a confection no one would want to eat. The Chartreuse Candy Cane Coral translates that into glazed ceramic, 4.25 inches wide and 2 inches deep, in a bright yellow-green. The stripes are not painted; they come from fine ridges shaped into each head, which the glaze picks out on its own. It hangs from one screw. How to hang & display

Wall hanging

Works on drywall, plaster, or wood panelling. Drive a small screw at a slight upward angle, leaving the head proud of the wall. Slide the keyhole slot on the back over the screw head, adjust to level. Sits flush — no visible hardware.

No stud? No problem. A drywall anchor rated for the weight works fine.

Displaying a collection

Lay everything out on the floor first. Start with your anchor piece, build outward. Keep 2–3 inches between each piece and aim for the centre of the whole arrangement to land around eye level. Use painter's tape on the wall to map positions before committing to any screws.

Stripes From Shape, Not Paint

Candy cane coral grows as clusters of round, striped heads at the ends of short branches, and the stripes are where the name comes from. We kept the round heads and the clustered growth, then let the stripes come from the shaping rather than from paint. Each head has fine ridges running down its sides that the glaze picks out on its own. Chartreuse was chosen to push the form away from the reef's usual greens and browns into something brighter and more playful. On a piece this rounded, a sharp yellow-green reads cheerful rather than acidic. The glaze runs slightly darker into each ridge, so the stripes appear without a second color. It works best as a bright note on a wall of cooler blues and teals.

One Glaze Over Good Texture

Letting the shape of a piece do the decorating, rather than painting a pattern on, has been a Chive preference since 2004. A stripe drawn on a surface sits on top of it. A stripe shaped into the clay belongs to it, and changes with the light through the day. The candy cane coral is a good example of that habit. Its striping comes entirely from fine ridges shaped by hand, with the glaze settling into them, which means the pattern is never exactly the same from one piece to the next. A single glaze over good texture almost always looks better than two colors over a plain surface.
