On the reef, candy cane coral is green or brown and has never been mistaken for a holiday decoration. The Orange Candy Cane Coral is less certain about that. Its ceramic cluster of round, ridged heads, 4.25 inches across and 2 inches deep, is glazed in a warm orange that deepens toward burnt in every groove. The stripes come from the shaping, not paint, and hold their contrast from across a room. Hung on one screw, it stays exactly this cheerful all year without a drop of water.

How to hang & display

Wall hanging

Works on drywall, plaster, or wood panelling. Drive a small screw at a slight upward angle, leaving the head proud of the wall. Slide the keyhole slot on the back over the screw head, adjust to level. Sits flush — no visible hardware.

No stud? No problem. A drywall anchor rated for the weight works fine.

Displaying a collection

Lay everything out on the floor first. Start with your anchor piece, build outward. Keep 2–3 inches between each piece and aim for the centre of the whole arrangement to land around eye level. Use painter's tape on the wall to map positions before committing to any screws.

Table & shelf display: Equally beautiful propped on a shelf, mantle, or side table. Pair with books, candles, or a small pot.

Warm Glaze, Deeper Ridges

The Orange Candy Cane Coral shares its form with the chartreuse version, clustered round heads with fine ridges running down their sides, but the warmer glaze changes the piece's temperament entirely. Where chartreuse reads bright and fresh, orange reads warm and a little bold. We tested the orange against the ridges carefully, since a strong color can flatten texture, and settled on a glaze that darkens toward a burnt tone in each groove and stays lighter on the raised edges. That contrast keeps the stripes visible at a distance. Real candy cane coral is usually green or brown, so orange takes the form further from the reef than any other color it comes in. It suits rooms that already carry terracotta, rust or warm wood.

Warm and Cool Versions of One Form

Offering one form in contrasting colors has been a Chive practice since 2004, partly so pieces can be mixed on one wall and partly because every change of glaze teaches something about the shape. The candy cane coral taught that lesson clearly. The ridged texture that reads as delicate in chartreuse reads as strong and graphic in orange, and the ridges were deepened slightly so neither version lost its stripes. Warm colors tend to need deeper texture to hold their detail, a rule that has held across many collections. Pairing warm and cool versions of one form on the same wall is one of the easiest ways to build a gallery that feels intentional.
