Ivory Chrysanthemum

The Coastal Collection, in ivory — the chrysanthemum form

Regular price $42.15

A glazed ceramic flower for the wall, 4.5 inches wide and 2 inches deep. The Ivory Chrysanthemum is shaped in the fully double chrysanthemum form: compact, spherical, tight concentric petal rings. The chrysanthemum has been the imperial botanical of Japan for over a thousand years, which gives it more credentials than most things on your wall. In ivory glaze it is quiet and correct, and gets quieter and more correct the longer it is there. One screw, keyhole mount on the back. Part of the Coastal Collection.

How to hang & display

Wall hanging

Works on drywall, plaster, or wood panelling. Drive a small screw at a slight upward angle, leaving the head proud of the wall. Slide the keyhole slot on the back over the screw head, adjust to level. Sits flush — no visible hardware.

No stud? No problem. A drywall anchor rated for the weight works fine.

Displaying a collection

Lay everything out on the floor first. Start with your anchor piece, build outward. Keep 2–3 inches between each piece and aim for the centre of the whole arrangement to land around eye level. Use painter's tape on the wall to map positions before committing to any screws.

Table & shelf display: Equally beautiful propped on a shelf, mantle, or side table. Pair with books, candles, or a small pot.

The chrysanthemum that has been on walls for a thousand years and is now on yours

We make the Coastal Collection for rooms that chose white before it was fashionable and have not second-guessed it since. The Ivory Chrysanthemum is the densest piece in that collection: the fully double rounded form kiln-fired in an ivory glaze, correct on a white wall in a way that gets quieter and more certain the longer it is there.

The chrysanthemum was among the first forms Chive produced. In ivory it has been on white walls for over two decades.

A thousand years of botanical history in the palette that goes with everything

The chrysanthemum is the imperial flower of Japan. It appears on the imperial seal and has been the defining botanical symbol of the household since the eighth century. That gives the form a cultural history longer than most countries.

The Ivory Chrysanthemum carries that history on a keyhole mount into a room that has already made its color decisions. Todd Newgren designed it. The cultural context came with the form.

The Safe Color Was Never Safe. — Coastal Collection.

The Coastal pieces are built to disappear into a room until someone notices them. On a white wall, in good light, that usually takes about two days.

Ivory, white, blue white. Pick the one that fits your wall and find out where it goes.

Frequently asked questions

What makes the Ivory Chrysanthemum a good fit for a Coastal room?

The chrysanthemum in ivory is the piece that works in a Coastal room without explanation. The form is compact and spherical, the ivory glaze sits in the same tonal family as white walls, and the chrysanthemum has been on walls long enough that it carries no decorating trend with it. It is the Coastal Collection piece that was correct before coastal decor was a category.

Is this a good gift for someone who already has good taste?

The Ivory Chrysanthemum is the right gift for someone who has committed to a neutral interior and wants a botanical element with some history behind it. The chrysanthemum form carries over a thousand years of cultural weight. In ivory on a white wall it shows up as a considered choice rather than a generic floral. Ships in a gift box.

What does the chrysanthemum mean as a flower?

The chrysanthemum is the imperial flower of Japan and has been the defining botanical symbol of the Japanese imperial household since the eighth century. In Western botanical tradition it is associated with longevity and loyalty. In the language of flowers it carried meanings of fidelity and devoted love.

What is the fully double chrysanthemum form?

The fully double chrysanthemum is the compact, spherical cultivar form where all petals are filled in from center to outer ring, creating a dense rounded profile. It is the form that appears on the Japanese imperial seal and in most traditional chrysanthemum ceramic work. The Ivory Chrysanthemum uses this form because it holds the ivory glaze well and creates a profile that works at any viewing distance.

What wall color works with the Ivory Chrysanthemum?

White, off-white, warm gray, linen, and cream walls all work with the Ivory Chrysanthemum. The ivory glaze sits in the warm white family, which means it belongs to the same palette as most neutral walls rather than contrasting with them. It does not compete for attention.

Is the Ivory Chrysanthemum good for a gallery wall?

The Ivory Chrysanthemum is compact enough to fill supporting positions in a gallery wall arrangement and specific enough to anchor one. The spherical form holds its profile from every angle, so placement is flexible. It works alongside framed art, other ceramic flowers, or on its own on a wall that needs one specific botanical element.

Is this ready to give as a gift?

The Ivory Chrysanthemum ships in a gift box included with purchase. No additional wrapping needed. Ships gift-ready to over 40 countries.

How does the Ivory Chrysanthemum hang?

The Ivory Chrysanthemum hangs on a single screw using the keyhole mount on the back. The piece ships with a screw, wall anchor, and instructions. Installation takes about ninety seconds and requires a screwdriver only. The mount sits flush against the wall once hung, with no visible hardware.
