Build Your Floral Wall With These:

Designed to cluster naturally, like a wild garden. Choose a flower as your design anchor, then grow your custom floral wall with these companions:

A 52nd anniversary gift deserves a shape with some presence, and Ivory Spider Mum brings exactly that while somehow still keeping its manners. The spiky, asymmetrical form is the most dramatic silhouette in the ivory lineup, yet it settles into a white wall as politely as anything else in the collection, disappearing almost entirely the moment it's actually hung. It suits beach wall decor in a lighter room, and makes a fitting gift for a veterinarian who appreciates real structure without unnecessary fuss. Artisans shape these pieces by hand at Chive, and the asymmetry never looks machined or repeated from one piece to the next. No trimming, no watering can, no seasonal cutback required at any point in its life on the wall. Wadsworth Atheneum keeps a curated handful of Chive pieces on display through its gift program, this spider mum currently one of them, beside other boldly shaped objects that still manage to behave.

How to hang & display

Wall hanging

Works on drywall, plaster, or wood panelling. Drive a small screw at a slight upward angle, leaving the head proud of the wall. Slide the keyhole slot on the back over the screw head, adjust to level. Sits flush — no visible hardware.

No stud? No problem. A drywall anchor rated for the weight works fine.

Displaying a collection

Lay everything out on the floor first. Start with your anchor piece, build outward. Keep 2–3 inches between each piece and aim for the centre of the whole arrangement to land around eye level. Use painter's tape on the wall to map positions before committing to any screws.

Table & shelf display: Equally beautiful propped on a shelf, mantle, or side table. Pair with books, candles, or a small pot.

Ivory Chrysanthemum ceramic wall flower styled on wall — Coastal Collection — Chive Studio Toronto

Unique coastal decor, original flower designs in 200+ art galleries and institutions worldwide

The most dramatic shape in the entire ivory lineup — all spikes and asymmetry, nothing tidy about it — and yet somehow, the second it's actually mounted on a wall, it manages to vanish just as politely as everything else in ivory. Picture someone arriving at a funeral in a genuinely wild hat and still, somehow, ending up the quietest person in the room. I don't know how ivory pulls this off. I've stopped asking.

Customers still write in about their walls, same as with every other ivory piece we make, which tells me the drama of the shape has nothing to do with how much people want to tell us about their paint choices. I used to think the spider mum, being louder, might attract a different kind of customer — someone less inclined toward the wall-color confessional. I was wrong. The emails come in exactly the same, unprompted and specific, regardless of how many spikes are involved.

We still don't need to know. We've made peace with that a long time ago. But I'll admit there's something almost reassuring about it now — proof that ivory does its one job, quietly and completely, no matter how loud the flower underneath it was trying to be.

Ivory Comanche Peony ceramic wall flower styled on wall — Coastal Collection — Chive Studio Toronto

Part of the Coastal Collection

The Coastal collection picked up its ease from porches that never worried about salt air, since nothing here was ever precious — driftwood pale, sea glass blue, a shell-toned bloom left weathered. Every piece trades gloss for something sun-faded. Ivory Spider Mum keeps that same weathered calm running through its very core, its spiky, asymmetrical shape fully softened the moment it settles into a wall finished in soft ivory.

Two Ways to Display

Every Chive ceramic flower works two ways: mounted vertically as a growing gallery wall, or laid flat as a no-water tablescape. Ivory Spider Mum earns its spot as a standalone wall piece thanks to its dramatic, spiky shape, but it also works well laid flat within a broader tablescape arrangement. Combine it with rounder, softer ivory shapes for visual contrast in a permanent display that holds its exact form indefinitely once set.

Complete the Look

Ivory Spider Mum benefits from a plant nearby with a simpler silhouette, letting the mum's spiky shape stay the most dramatic element in the grouping. The Minute Large Ceramic Pot Burgundy adds depth of color without pulling focus from the piece itself. Set them together on a side table or bookshelf for a pairing with real visual contrast. The pot's warmth grounds the mum's more angular, asymmetrical form nicely.

The Safe Color Was Never Safe. — Coastal Collection.

Spider mums took longer to get right in ceramic than almost anything else Chive has made, mostly because the shape wants to be spiky and asymmetrical while somehow still reading as deliberate rather than broken. Early attempts looked more like accidents than florals. These pieces are still shaped by hand in small batches today, each spike individually formed before the whole piece goes into the kiln, and the process still takes noticeably longer than our simpler shapes. What convinced us to keep making it wasn't the drama of the silhouette — it was watching it disappear so completely once it was actually mounted on ivory. The shape earns its complexity quietly, which is a strange thing to say about something this spiky.

Frequently asked questions

How does a Ivory Spider Mum hang on the wall?

A Ivory Spider Mum hangs from a single hook using the keyhole cutout built into the back of the piece. Its asymmetrical shape means the balance point isn't always exactly where people expect it to be at first glance. We mark the correct hanging point clearly during production. Most people get it right immediately.

What is a unique 52nd anniversary gift idea?

A unique 52nd anniversary gift idea should avoid whatever everyone else already sent for the fiftieth, which usually rules out flowers entirely from the running. Ivory Spider Mum stands out through shape alone, no explanation required from the giver. It also happens to last considerably longer than anything cut from a garden. Fifty-two deserves real staying power.

Is a ceramic spider mum a good anniversary gift?

A ceramic spider mum makes a genuinely good anniversary gift, mostly because the dramatic shape gives it presence without requiring bold color to get attention at all. Ivory Spider Mum stays exactly as bold and exactly as intact for years afterward. There's no wilting curve to watch. It just holds its shape.

Does an ivory ceramic spider mum work as beach decor?

An ivory ceramic spider mum works well as beach decor, since the pale tone reads as sun-bleached without ever needing real sun exposure. Ivory Spider Mum pairs naturally with driftwood, rope, and other textured coastal elements. Its spiky shape adds visual interest without disrupting the overall calm. It earns its place in that palette.

What ships inside the box with a Ivory Spider Mum order?

Every Ivory Spider Mum order ships in a branded Chive gift box, ready to present without extra wrapping required on your end at all. A printed card inside explains the hanging hardware, already built into the back of the piece. Nothing needs assembly beyond finding the right hook. It arrives ready to mount.

What is a thoughtful gift for a veterinarian?

A thoughtful gift for a veterinarian usually means something sturdy and well-made, given how much their days can involve delicate situations. Ivory Spider Mum brings real structural presence without ever needing upkeep of any kind. It sits on a wall and simply holds its shape. Some clinics keep one at the front desk.

How long does a ceramic spider mum last versus a fresh mum?

A ceramic spider mum lasts indefinitely versus a fresh mum, which typically wilts and browns within one to two weeks depending on conditions. Ivory Spider Mum holds its exact shape and color for years without any visible change. There's no vase, no trimming, no eventual replacement needed. It simply remains as it arrived.

Is a ceramic spider mum a good retirement gift?

A ceramic spider mum makes a strong retirement gift, mostly because it marks a genuine milestone without adding to a household that's likely already quite full. Ivory Spider Mum requires zero maintenance during a season meant for actually relaxing at last. It just hangs there, permanently finished. That fits the moment well.
