Build Your Floral Wall With These:

Designed to cluster naturally, like a wild garden. Choose a flower as your design anchor, then grow your custom floral wall with these companions:

Strawflower meaning has always centered on permanence — it's one of the few flowers that dries on its own and keeps its color and shape without any help. The Ivory Strawflower translates that same quality into ceramic, holding its papery, layered form in a soft ivory finish that never actually needs to dry out to look finished. It suits a beach house shelf or an entryway wall equally well, standing in for the pressed botanicals and dried arrangements that usually crowd coastal decor. There's no water schedule, no browning at the edges, no need to swap it out before it turns brittle. It arrives ready to hang and stays that way, a small piece that does the job a real dried strawflower does but without the eventual crumble. Santa Barbara Botanic Garden has long championed plants suited to dry, coastal climates, and the strawflower's natural resilience fits squarely into that same appreciation for things built to hold up against salt air and sun.

How to hang & display

Wall hanging

Works on drywall, plaster, or wood panelling. Drive a small screw at a slight upward angle, leaving the head proud of the wall. Slide the keyhole slot on the back over the screw head, adjust to level. Sits flush — no visible hardware.

No stud? No problem. A drywall anchor rated for the weight works fine.

Displaying a collection

Lay everything out on the floor first. Start with your anchor piece, build outward. Keep 2–3 inches between each piece and aim for the centre of the whole arrangement to land around eye level. Use painter's tape on the wall to map positions before committing to any screws.

Table & shelf display: Equally beautiful propped on a shelf, mantle, or side table. Pair with books, candles, or a small pot.

Ivory Chrysanthemum ceramic wall flower styled on wall — Coastal Collection — Chive Studio Toronto

The Ivory Strawflower, Explained

Someone on staff once tried to dry an actual strawflower on a windowsill for a scrapbook project that never quite happened, and it worked so well she forgot it was there for two full years. That's the whole appeal of a strawflower to begin with — it's the one bloom that seems to already know it's supposed to last, papery and stiff even while it's still technically alive on the stem. The Ivory Strawflower takes that same instinct and simply removes the two-year waiting period entirely. Chive shaped its layered, slightly crinkled petals to catch the same texture a dried strawflower gets naturally over time, except this version arrives already finished instead of asking anyone to wait around for it. It suits a windowsill just as well as the real one did, minus the risk of someone eventually knocking it into the trash by accident during a round of spring cleaning. Ivory was the obvious color choice, since a real strawflower this pale tends to look almost bleached out by the time it's fully dried anyway. This one skips the waiting and the bleaching both, and just shows up looking like the finished result from day one, permanently, no windowsill required.

About This Collection

Sea glass gets its color from years, not hours, and this collection borrows that same patience for every piece in the set. Where the Keiko Peony captures a bloom at its fullest moment, the Strawflower captures one already past that point and settling into something papery and permanent. Explore the Ivory Chrysanthemum for a denser, more layered texture nearby on the wall.

Styling This Piece

Every Chive ceramic flower works two ways: mounted vertically as a growing gallery wall, or laid flat as a no-water tablescape. The Strawflower's crinkled, papery texture pairs naturally with the Ivory Rose for a wall grouping that mixes stiff and soft forms side by side. Set on a console with dried botanicals or driftwood, it blends in rather than competing for attention. It works as the quiet piece in a room that already has a focal point. Complete the Collection

The Strawflower's dried, papery look pairs naturally with something that actually holds a live plant, since the contrast does more work than a matching pair ever could. The Joe Metal Pot 5 Inch gives a windowsill or desk a second texture to work with, without needing to match the ivory tone exactly or coordinate on any deliberate color scheme. A living plant next to a permanent one makes an odd kind of sense once you actually see it.

The Chive Story

Every Chive flower starts the same way a real one does — as a shape someone in the studio decided was worth holding onto past its natural window of looking its best. The strawflower made that decision easy, since it was already halfway to permanent all on its own. Chive Ceramics Studio has spent the years since 2004 turning that same instinct into a full catalog, one piece shaped and finished by hand at a time, batch after batch rather than off a single master mold somewhere off-site. It's slower than mass production, and that's treated as the whole point rather than a limitation to eventually engineer around or apologize for later.

Frequently asked questions

What does the strawflower mean in floral symbolism?

Strawflower meaning centers on permanence and remembrance, which tracks with a flower that dries naturally on the stem without special treatment. It's one of the few blooms whose papery petals hold their color and shape long after cutting, which is why it shows up in dried arrangements more than fresh bouquets. Chive's ceramic version leans into that symbolism without the drying step. The meaning was already built in.

Is a ceramic strawflower better than a real dried one?

A ceramic strawflower skips the slow drying process a real one needs and arrives already at the finished, papery-textured stage real strawflowers eventually reach on their own. It won't crumble at the edges the way a dried stem does after a few years on a shelf. For anyone who's had a dried arrangement disintegrate during a move, the ceramic version solves that specific problem permanently. It's the same look, minus the eventual dust pile.

What wall decor works well in a beach house or coastal room?

Beach wall decor tends to favor muted, sun-bleached tones over anything glossy, which is why the Ivory Strawflower fits naturally into that palette. Its papery texture echoes the dried botanicals that already show up in coastal interiors without looking like a themed decoration. It reads as collected over time rather than purchased as a set. Most coastal decor tries too hard; this just belongs.

Does the Ivory Strawflower need water or sunlight to last?

No — the Ivory Strawflower is ceramic, so it needs no water, no sunlight, and no rotation to prevent fading on one side. That's a meaningful difference from a real dried strawflower, which can still bleach unevenly or grow brittle near a sunny window. It holds its exact tone indefinitely, in any spot.

What's a good gift for a school principal or retiring teacher?

A gift for a principal or retiring teacher tends to work best when it's professional rather than personal, and a small ceramic wall piece threads that needle well. The Ivory Strawflower doesn't need a desk or a windowsill with direct light, so it fits an office as easily as a home. It also travels well if the recipient is packing up a classroom for the last time.

How long does a strawflower last compared to a fresh one?

A real strawflower can last months once dried, longer than most cut flowers, but it eventually turns brittle and starts shedding petals. The ceramic version removes that eventual endpoint entirely and holds its shape without any drying period or slow decline. Chive just finished what a real one gets to anyway.

Is this considered a faux or artificial strawflower?

The Ivory Strawflower isn't a faux or artificial version of a dried bloom — it's a ceramic sculpture shaped by hand to reference the strawflower's natural papery texture. It doesn't try to pass as a preserved botanical, and it skips fabric, plastic, or resin construction. Chive Ceramics Studio treats it as its own object, not a stand-in. That distinction matters once it's hanging next to real dried stems.

What's a low-maintenance option for dried flower wall decor?

Dried flower wall decor eventually sheds or fades, even when it's been treated well, which makes a ceramic alternative like the Ivory Strawflower a lower-maintenance option long-term. It never needs replacing, dusting with special care, or protecting from humidity swings the way real dried botanicals do. It just hangs, indefinitely, in whatever spot it's given. That's a meaningfully different maintenance schedule than zero.
