Build Your Floral Wall With These:

Designed to cluster naturally, like a wild garden. Choose a flower as your design anchor, then grow your custom floral wall with these companions:

The carnation has been in continuous cultivation for over two thousand years and has not run out of things to say. The Oatmeal Solar Carnation is a ceramic wall flower, 3.5 inches across, one screw, no water. The solar form has petals radiating outward from a dense center in the specific way that carnations curl when they have decided to be fully themselves. Oatmeal is the color of warmth arrived at slowly rather than announced. Two thousand years of cultivation produced this form. The oatmeal glaze produced the version that belongs in the Japan Collection.

How to hang & display

Wall hanging

Works on drywall, plaster, or wood panelling. Drive a small screw at a slight upward angle, leaving the head proud of the wall. Slide the keyhole slot on the back over the screw head, adjust to level. Sits flush — no visible hardware.

No stud? No problem. A drywall anchor rated for the weight works fine.

Displaying a collection

Lay everything out on the floor first. Start with your anchor piece, build outward. Keep 2–3 inches between each piece and aim for the centre of the whole arrangement to land around eye level. Use painter's tape on the wall to map positions before committing to any screws.

Table & shelf display: Equally beautiful propped on a shelf, mantle, or side table. Pair with books, candles, or a small pot.

The Story Behind This Piece

Carnations named after the sun are almost always glazed bright yellow or orange, and we debated doing the expected thing here before deciding a ruffled, densely petaled form this detailed deserved a color that let the texture do the work instead of the brightness. Oatmeal was not the obvious choice for something called a solar carnation, and we knew that going in. The ruffled petal edges, which tend to disappear under a saturated glaze, show clearly in a neutral tone, catching shadow along every fold in a way a brighter color simply flattens out. We tested the standard bright-yellow version first, largely out of obligation to the name, and set it aside once the oatmeal test piece came out of the kiln showing considerably more of the actual ruffle detail. The name stayed. The color did not go the direction the name suggests.

Part of the Japan Collection

The Japan collection learned its patience from rooms built around one object instead of a crowded shelf — an off-center bloom, an asymmetrical bract, a glaze left looking unfinished. Every piece trades abundance for one flower a room needs. The Oatmeal Solar Carnation keeps the carnation's ruffled density while dropping into a neutral the sun never quite reaches. A neutral carnation rounds out the same palette.

Two Ways to Display

Every Chive ceramic flower works two ways: mounted vertically as a growing gallery wall, or laid flat as a no-water tablescape. The Oatmeal Solar Carnation's ruffled density reads most dimensional mounted vertically, where each fold catches its own shadow, and compresses into a tighter, denser shape laid flat among other pieces. Either way the neutral oatmeal glaze never drifts toward the brighter tones the name suggests. Shop the full Japan Collection.

Complete the Look

A Minute Ceramic Pot in Blue Layer nearby manages the actual drainage a living plant needs, something this ruffled carnation was never built to provide regardless of how dense its petals get. The cooler blue layers give the carnation's warm neutral a calm counterpoint. Shop the Minute Ceramic Pot in Blue Layer.

About Chive Ceramics Studio

Chive has occasionally let a flower's name and its finished glaze pull in different directions since 2004, when the alternative color genuinely serves the piece better than the expected one would. A ruffled, densely petaled carnation is a clear case for that kind of decision, since a bright glaze tends to flatten fine petal detail that a neutral tone reveals instead. The studio keeps testing the obvious color option first regardless, if only to confirm the more interesting alternative actually earns its place rather than simply being different for its own sake. Two decades of that habit has produced a handful of pieces, this one included, where the name and the glaze tell two slightly different stories on purpose.

Frequently asked questions

How does the Oatmeal Solar Carnation hang on the wall?

The Oatmeal Solar Carnation hangs on a single screw using the keyhole mount on the back. Screw, wall anchor, and instructions are included. Installation takes about ninety seconds. The mount sits flush against the wall. No visible hardware remains. It can be repositioned without wall damage

What does a carnation flower mean?

The carnation has been assigned more meanings than most flowers can sustain across more than two thousand years of cultivation. In the broadest language of flowers it represents love, fascination, and distinction. Pink carnations specifically represent a mother's love in the Mother's Day tradition. In Japan the carnation appears at Haha no Hi -- Mother's Day -- and carries a meaning of pure affection. The solar form adds a layer of radiance to all of this, which the oatmeal glaze brings back to earth

Is the Oatmeal Solar Carnation a good cottagecore wall art piece?

The Oatmeal Solar Carnation is a strong cottagecore wall art piece. The solar carnation form is ruffled and radiant, the oatmeal glaze is warm and neutral, and the carnation has a long history in cottage and kitchen gardens across Europe and Japan. It ships in a gift box. For a room that favors layered botanical elements in warm neutrals, the Solar Carnation is a piece that fits the language of the room rather than introducing a new one

What room suits the Oatmeal Solar Carnation?

The Oatmeal Solar Carnation works well in kitchens, living rooms, and bedrooms -- rooms where warmth and botanical detail read as appropriate. The oatmeal glaze is warm and sits well against cream, off-white, and warm natural-tone walls. The Ansel Adams Gallery carries Chive ceramics -- a context where the relationship between light and form has been considered seriously

What style does the Oatmeal Solar Carnation suit?

The Oatmeal Solar Carnation suits cottagecore, warm minimalist, organic modern, and botanical interiors well. The ruffled form is botanical and detailed, the oatmeal glaze is warm and neutral, and the solar radiation pattern gives the piece a presence that extends beyond its actual size

Is the Oatmeal Solar Carnation a good gift for someone who loves warm interiors?

The Oatmeal Solar Carnation is an excellent gift for someone with a warm interior. The oatmeal glaze is warm without being orange, the solar carnation form is radiant without being loud, and the combination reads as a considered botanical choice. It ships gift-ready in a gift box

Does the Oatmeal Solar Carnation come gift-ready?

The Oatmeal Solar Carnation ships in a gift box included with purchase. No additional wrapping needed. Ships to over forty countries. The box is designed to be given directly

Has anyone ever pointed out that oatmeal is not a solar color?

Yes. The response is that the form radiates and the color grounds, which together produce something more interesting than either solar or oatmeal would have managed alone. The Ansel Adams Gallery, which carries this piece and has spent decades thinking about light and form, agrees
