A sea urchin spends its life on the ocean floor, covered in spines, eating algae and asking nothing of anyone. The Orange Sea Urchin keeps the spines and moves to the wall. It is a ceramic sea urchin 4.5 inches across and 3 inches deep, hung from one screw, with no water, no tank and no salt involved. Real urchins come in purple, black and dark red. This one is orange, which no urchin has ever been, and it has not asked for an opinion on the matter. It hangs in under two minutes and stays exactly this shade.

How to hang & display

Wall hanging

Works on drywall, plaster, or wood panelling. Drive a small screw at a slight upward angle, leaving the head proud of the wall. Slide the keyhole slot on the back over the screw head, adjust to level. Sits flush — no visible hardware.

No stud? No problem. A drywall anchor rated for the weight works fine.

Displaying a collection

Lay everything out on the floor first. Start with your anchor piece, build outward. Keep 2–3 inches between each piece and aim for the centre of the whole arrangement to land around eye level. Use painter's tape on the wall to map positions before committing to any screws.

Table & shelf display: Equally beautiful propped on a shelf, mantle, or side table. Pair with books, candles, or a small pot.

Why the Spines Got Shorter

A sea urchin is mostly spines, and the first test pieces showed how quickly a round body covered in points can read as a pincushion instead of an animal. We shortened the spines, pulled them closer to the body, and let them radiate from the center in tighter rows so the form stayed recognizable at a distance without looking aggressive up close. Orange came next. Living urchins run toward purple, black and deep red, and an orange urchin is not something most people have seen on a reef, which was part of the appeal. We adjusted the glaze until it pooled slightly darker between the spines and stayed bright along the tips, so the texture does the shading rather than a second color. The result reads warm and a little sunny for something that lives on the sea floor.

Texture Before Color

Texture is usually the hardest part of turning a non-flower into a ceramic wall piece, and Chive has been working that problem since 2004. A flat petal forgives a lot. A surface covered in points forgives almost nothing, since every spine is shaped by hand and every one of them catches light differently. The rule for pieces like this is that the outline should be readable first and the detail second, which is why the urchin's spines were shortened rather than exaggerated. A bold single glaze like orange then has to stay even across a surface broken into so many small points without pooling into blotches, which took several rounds of testing before the color sat evenly enough to ship.
