Build Your Floral Wall With These:

Designed to cluster naturally, like a wild garden. Choose a flower as your design anchor, then grow your custom floral wall with these companions:

The sunflower arrived in Japan from North America during the Meiji era and was immediately subjected to the attention Japan gives imported forms with good structure. The Peach Mocha Sunflower is a ceramic wall flower, 4 inches across, one screw, no water — warmer than the original, more autumnal, less insistent. The sunflower went through the Japanese process and came out more interesting than it arrived, which is what the Japanese process produces when the starting material is correct. The peach mocha glaze was not in the original. That is the point.

How to hang & display

Wall hanging

Works on drywall, plaster, or wood panelling. Drive a small screw at a slight upward angle, leaving the head proud of the wall. Slide the keyhole slot on the back over the screw head, adjust to level. Sits flush — no visible hardware.

No stud? No problem. A drywall anchor rated for the weight works fine.

Displaying a collection

Lay everything out on the floor first. Start with your anchor piece, build outward. Keep 2–3 inches between each piece and aim for the centre of the whole arrangement to land around eye level. Use painter's tape on the wall to map positions before committing to any screws.

Table & shelf display: Equally beautiful propped on a shelf, mantle, or side table. Pair with books, candles, or a small pot.

The Story Behind This Piece

Sunflowers are supposed to be bright yellow, practically by definition, and glazing one in a warm, coffee-toned peach-mocha register instead was the kind of decision that needed to prove itself before we trusted it. The idea started as leftover glaze testing for an entirely different flower, tried on a sunflower almost as an afterthought to see whether the warm tones would read as autumnal or simply wrong. They read as autumnal, unexpectedly close to a sunflower field photographed at dusk rather than at midday, which is not an angle we had planned to capture in clay. We kept testing the ratio between peach and mocha until the gradient settled into something that looked deliberately warm rather than accidentally muddy, since those two tones sit close enough together to blur into an undefined brown if the balance is off even slightly.

Part of the Japan Collection

The Japan collection learned its patience from rooms built around one object instead of a crowded shelf — an off-center bloom, an asymmetrical bract, a glaze left looking unfinished. Every piece trades abundance for one flower a room needs. The Peach Mocha Sunflower trades the sunflower's usual bright yellow for a warmer, coffee-toned register that reads as dusk rather than noon. A warmer, coffee-toned neighbor shifts the mood nearby.

Two Ways to Display

Every Chive ceramic flower works two ways: mounted vertically as a growing gallery wall, or laid flat as a no-water tablescape. The Peach Mocha Sunflower's warm, coffee-toned glaze reads most like dusk mounted vertically, where it catches ambient light rather than direct sun, and settles into something cozier laid flat on a shelf. Either way the color stays exactly as warm as it fired, with no noon brightness to chase. Shop the full Japan Collection.

Complete the Look

A Minute Small Pot in Terracotta nearby takes on the actual drainage a living plant needs, something this warm-toned sunflower was never designed to manage on its own. Both pieces share the same coffee-and-clay warmth without competing for the same shelf space. Shop the Minute Small Pot in Terracotta.

About Chive Ceramics Studio

Chive treats a flower's expected color as a starting point rather than a rule, and has since 2004, provided the alternative genuinely holds up under testing rather than simply being contrarian. A sunflower's association with bright yellow is about as strong as any flower-color pairing in the entire range, which made the peach-mocha alternative a harder sell internally before a single test piece existed. The studio has learned that warm, adjacent tones like peach and mocha require more precise ratio testing than a single bold color does, since they blur into mud rather than clash outright when the balance is wrong. Two decades of testing unlikely color reassignments is why this one made it to production instead of staying a one-off experiment.

What style does the Peach Mocha Sunflower suit?

Is the Peach Mocha Sunflower a good autumn decor piece?

The peach mocha glaze is autumnal in tone, the sunflower is associated with late summer and autumn, and the combination reads as seasonal without requiring rotation. Does the Peach Mocha Sunflower come gift-ready?

Has the Peach Mocha Sunflower been informed that it is the most unexpectedly Japanese piece in the collection?

It has been informed. It finds this an appropriate outcome for a flower that arrived from North America and then went through the full Japanese process. The Maritime Aquarium carries this piece and is on record as finding the outcome of that process satisfactory
