Build Your Floral Wall With These:

Designed to cluster naturally, like a wild garden. Choose a flower as your design anchor, then grow your custom floral wall with these companions:

Cosmos comes from the Greek word for order, which the flower has been living up to for longer than anyone has been paying attention. Eight petals, symmetrical, no excess, nothing withheld. The Sand Cosmos is a ceramic wall flower, 3.75 inches across, one screw, no water. Sand is the color of restraint as a philosophy rather than a limitation — something that arrived at simplicity on purpose. The cosmos came to the Japan Collection already knowing where it was going. It was going here.

How to hang & display

Wall hanging

Works on drywall, plaster, or wood panelling. Drive a small screw at a slight upward angle, leaving the head proud of the wall. Slide the keyhole slot on the back over the screw head, adjust to level. Sits flush — no visible hardware.

No stud? No problem. A drywall anchor rated for the weight works fine.

Displaying a collection

Lay everything out on the floor first. Start with your anchor piece, build outward. Keep 2–3 inches between each piece and aim for the centre of the whole arrangement to land around eye level. Use painter's tape on the wall to map positions before committing to any screws.

Table & shelf display: Equally beautiful propped on a shelf, mantle, or side table. Pair with books, candles, or a small pot.

The Story Behind This Piece

Most of the pieces in this collection carry some kind of layered or overlapping structure, so the cosmos was a deliberate exception: eight petals, evenly spaced, nothing behind them and nothing extra added. That simplicity turned out to be harder to execute than a denser flower, since a single open ring of petals has nowhere to hide an uneven gap or a slightly misaligned point the way a layered form can. We rebuilt the spacing jig twice before the eight petals sat at genuinely equal intervals rather than looking close enough. Sand was chosen specifically because a cosmos is usually white or pink, and we wanted this version to feel like it had spent a long time near water rather than in a garden bed. The glaze settles evenly across the flat petal surface with nothing to pool or shadow, which suits a flower this deliberately plain.

Part of the Japan Collection

The Japan collection learned its patience from rooms built around one object instead of a crowded shelf — an off-center bloom, an asymmetrical bract, a glaze left looking unfinished. Every piece trades abundance for one flower a room needs. The Sand Cosmos simplifies the collection's usual complexity into a single, open-faced bloom, sand-toned rather than the expected white or pink. A simpler, open-faced bloom offers a calmer counterpoint.

Two Ways to Display

Every Chive ceramic flower works two ways: mounted vertically as a growing gallery wall, or laid flat as a no-water tablescape. The Sand Cosmos's simple, eight-petaled form reads as a clean, open shape mounted vertically, and settles into a calm, single-bloom accent laid flat among busier pieces. Either way the sand glaze stays exactly as understated as it was designed to be. Shop the full Japan Collection.

Complete the Look

A Duck Plant Pot nearby handles the actual drainage a living plant needs, something this simple, open-faced cosmos was never built to require. Both pieces share the same instinct for keeping a shape uncomplicated rather than crowding it with detail. Shop the Duck Plant Pot.

About Chive Ceramics Studio

Chive occasionally strips a form back to its simplest possible version, and has since 2004, on the theory that restraint is its own kind of design decision rather than the absence of one. A single, evenly spaced ring of petals is a specific test of precision, since there is no layering or overlap left to disguise an uneven gap the way a denser flower allows. The studio has learned that the plainest-looking pieces in the catalog are frequently among the more exacting to build correctly, precisely because there's nowhere for a small error to hide. Two decades of that lesson is why a piece this simple still goes through the same rigorous testing as the collection's most elaborate forms.

Frequently asked questions

How does the Sand Cosmos hang on the wall?

The Sand Cosmos hangs on a single screw using the keyhole mount on the back. Screw, wall anchor, and instructions are all included. Installation takes about ninety seconds. The mount sits flush against the wall and leaves no visible hardware. It can be repositioned without wall damage

What does a cosmos flower mean?

The cosmos flower carries a meaning of order, wholeness, and peace -- the name comes from the Greek word for the universe, which the ancient Greeks used to describe something that was harmonious and well-ordered rather than chaotic. In Japan the cosmos is an autumn flower, associated with the changing of the season and with the particular kind of beauty that has an end date. The Sand Cosmos in ceramic is the permanent version of that feeling -- autumn light on a wall that does not change

Is the Sand Cosmos a good gift for someone who lives minimally?

The Sand Cosmos is one of the better gifts in the collection for someone who lives minimally. The form is simple -- eight petals, unambiguous, nothing extra -- and the sand glaze is as close to a neutral as the Japan Collection produces without crossing into white. It ships in a gift box. For someone who owns things carefully and would prefer one considered object to several that were simply purchased, the Sand Cosmos earns the wall space

What room suits the Sand Cosmos?

The Sand Cosmos works well in rooms built around restraint -- a bedroom that has committed to a quiet palette, a home office that benefits from one organic element, an entryway that wants something botanical and undemanding. The sand glaze sits against almost any wall color without creating tension. The Atlanta Botanical Garden carries Chive ceramics, which confirms the piece works in a setting where botanical forms are taken seriously

What style does the Sand Cosmos suit?

The Sand Cosmos suits Japandi, minimalist, Scandinavian, and wabi-sabi interiors particularly well -- the cosmos form is simple and the sand glaze is warm without being loud. It works as a grounding element in more layered interiors, where the simplicity of the form reads as intentional clarity. the Japan Collection was developed from Japanese botanical principles and the Sand Cosmos is among the most direct expressions of those principles in the collection

Is the Sand Cosmos a good housewarming gift?

The Sand Cosmos works well as a housewarming gift because it suits any room in a new space without requiring the recipient to have already decided what their walls are doing. The sand glaze is neutral enough to go anywhere and specific enough to look like a choice. It ships in a gift box to over forty countries. A piece that goes on the wall on the first day in a new home and stays there for years is a more useful housewarming gift than most things that arrive in boxes

Does the Sand Cosmos ship in a gift box?

The Sand Cosmos ships in a gift box included with purchase. No additional wrapping needed. It ships gift-ready to over forty countries. The box is designed to be given directly, which saves time and removes one variable from occasions that already have enough of them

Is the Sand Cosmos aware that the cosmos is also a word for the entire universe?

It is aware. It finds this an appropriate amount of ambition for a ceramic flower. The Atlanta Botanical Garden has had it on its walls without resolving the philosophical question, which is also a reasonable position
