Brain coral is named for its winding grooves, which do look a great deal like a brain and have never once been used for thinking. Some colonies live for centuries. The Teal Brain Coral is a glazed ceramic dome, 5.5 inches wide and 3 inches deep, covered in long, looping ridges shaped by hand, so no two pieces wander in quite the same way. The teal glaze settles darker in the grooves and lighter on the ridges, which draws the pattern without a second color. It hangs on one screw. It has no opinions, though it looks like it might.

How to hang & display

Wall hanging

Works on drywall, plaster, or wood panelling. Drive a small screw at a slight upward angle, leaving the head proud of the wall. Slide the keyhole slot on the back over the screw head, adjust to level. Sits flush — no visible hardware.

No stud? No problem. A drywall anchor rated for the weight works fine.

Displaying a collection

Lay everything out on the floor first. Start with your anchor piece, build outward. Keep 2–3 inches between each piece and aim for the centre of the whole arrangement to land around eye level. Use painter's tape on the wall to map positions before committing to any screws.

Table & shelf display: Equally beautiful propped on a shelf, mantle, or side table. Pair with books, candles, or a small pot.

  1. Dust with a soft dry cloth or soft-bristled brush. Do not use wet cloths or liquid cleaners.
  2. Keep away from direct moisture, steam, and outdoor conditions. Indoor display only.
  3. Handle by the base or stem — avoid pressure on individual petals.
  4. If storing, return to original gift box with foam insert for protection.

Not a Maze, Not a Scribble

Brain coral is named for the winding grooves that cover its surface, and those grooves were the entire design problem. Real brain coral meanders without repeating, and our first attempts looked either too orderly, like a maze, or too random, like scribbles. The final piece follows a few long, continuous ridges that loop back on themselves, enough to read as brain coral immediately without copying any single specimen. Every ridge was shaped by hand. Teal came naturally. The glaze settles darker in the grooves and lighter on the ridges, which draws the pattern more clearly than a second color could. It is one of the larger, weightier-looking pieces in the collection and works well as a centerpiece with smaller corals around it.

Shaping the Pattern Instead of Drawing It

A pattern taken from nature should feel inevitable rather than designed, and that rule has guided Chive's patterned surfaces since 2004. It is harder than it sounds. Brain coral grows its grooves over decades, sometimes centuries, and the result has a logic that is easy to recognize and difficult to imitate. The approach here was to stop drawing the pattern and start shaping it directly in clay, following the ridges by hand and letting them find their own path. That hand-led process is also why each Teal Brain Coral comes out slightly different from the last, which suits a form that never grows the same way twice on a reef.
