Cup corals grow as wide, shallow bowls, layered plates opening outward around a hollow center, as if the reef had decided to set the table. Made of glazed ceramic and measuring 4.75 by 2 inches, the Teal Cup Coral has an open bowl shape, a gently uneven rim and a teal glaze that sits right between the blues and greens of the reef. The center darkens, the rim lightens, and the bowl reads deep even on a flat wall. It hangs on one screw. It will not hold soup.

How to hang & display

Wall hanging

Works on drywall, plaster, or wood panelling. Drive a small screw at a slight upward angle, leaving the head proud of the wall. Slide the keyhole slot on the back over the screw head, adjust to level. Sits flush — no visible hardware.

No stud? No problem. A drywall anchor rated for the weight works fine.

Displaying a collection

Lay everything out on the floor first. Start with your anchor piece, build outward. Keep 2–3 inches between each piece and aim for the centre of the whole arrangement to land around eye level. Use painter's tape on the wall to map positions before committing to any screws.

Table & shelf display: Equally beautiful propped on a shelf, mantle, or side table. Pair with books, candles, or a small pot.

Getting the Rim Right

Cup corals grow as wide, shallow bowls, with layered plates that open outward around a central hollow. We kept that open bowl shape and let the plates overlap slightly as they rise, so the piece has the stacked quality of the real coral without the clutter of a full colony. The trick was the rim. A flat edge made the piece look like a dish, and a ruffled one made it look like a flower. The final version has a gently uneven rim that reads as grown rather than made. Teal suited the form because it sits right between the blues and greens of the reef, and the glaze darkens in the hollow at the center, which gives the bowl real depth on the wall. It is a strong anchor piece for an ocean-themed arrangement.

When an Edge Should Not Be Perfect

Knowing when an edge should look perfect, and when it should not, is something Chive has been learning since 2004. A perfectly even rim reads as manufactured, and on a form taken from nature that is usually the wrong signal. Edges like the Teal Cup Coral's are shaped by hand, with small irregularities left in so the piece looks grown rather than stamped, then checked against the original form to make sure the variation still reads as intentional. Teal does well on forms like this because it shifts noticeably between the deeper center and the lighter rim, which lets a single glaze describe the whole shape.
