There's No Such Thing as Just One Ornament

Pick a favorite. Then accept that "just one" was never really an option.

The Crossword Ornament is a flat glass grid, blown and pressed by hand, that has been filled in by a painter rather than a pencil, and the answers are permanently correct, which is more than most solvers can claim on a Thursday. Chive's version measures under three inches square, starting as a heated gather pressed into the proportions of a folded newspaper puzzle. The black squares are painted with an opacity that required two coats because the first pass let light through and a crossword with translucent voids is a crossword that has not committed. The white squares contain individual painted letters small enough that the brush tip was essentially a single bristle held at a fixed angle. The hanging loop exits from the top edge, treating the grid as a page that has been pinned to the tree the way a completed puzzle deserves display. It is an object the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame would file under creative obsessions honored in glass, alongside instruments and lyric sheets.

The Story Behind This Ornament

Agnes does the crossword in pen every morning before anyone else in the house is awake, which she considers a personal practice and not a competitive statement, although she has mentioned her completion time to her sister-in-law on more than one occasion and the mentioning was not accidental. She saw this ornament in a catalog and ordered it the same day, which for Agnes is impulsive because Agnes does not make same-day decisions about anything that is not a crossword clue, and she has opinions about people who do. She placed it on her tree at eye level because Agnes believes the crossword deserves to be read and not merely seen, and she positioned it so the painted letters face outward, toward the room, as if the grid is presenting itself for inspection, which Agnes respects as a posture. Her husband asked if the answers were real and Agnes said they are painted on glass and the question is whether they are correct and I have not yet decided, which is Agnes being funny in the way Agnes is funny, which is completely straight-faced and delivered without pause and often mistaken for sincerity by people who do not know her yet.

Care Tips

Storage Do’s and Don’ts:

(Because Yes, They’re Fragile)

  • Do wrap each ornament individually in soft tissue paper, bubble wrap, or a gentle cloth. (No, shoving them in a shoebox with tinsel does not count.)
  • Don’t let them clink around in a box together. That’s a recipe for heartbreak and glittery shards.
  • Do store them in a sturdy container (plastic bins with dividers = chef’s kiss) and keep it in a cool, dry place — no attics or sketchy basements, please.

Pro Tip: Label the box like your life depends on it.

Write it on every side, not just the top, since nobody unloading a truck reads the top first. If you're storing these for next year, do future you a favor and note what's inside beyond just "ornaments." A little specificity now saves a lot of bubble wrap archaeology in eleven months.

Hand-Blown Glass Christmas Ornaments

Hand-painted glass rewards the close look, and every Chive ornament is made to be inspected at arm's length — the distance where trees are actually enjoyed. Ceramic Flowers That Never Wilt

Chive trained its painters on ceramic flowers before ever handing them a glass ornament, and the steadiness required to paint letterforms on a surface the size of a sesame seed is the same steadiness the studio demands for the thinnest ceramic petal veins. Both tasks ask the hand to hold still at a scale where any tremor is visible. See the Ceramic Flowers collection for the work that built that steadiness.

About Chive Studio

Chive has operated since 2004 on the belief that the smallest painted detail on any piece is the one that matters most, because a buyer will forgive a slight variation in shape but will notice a letter that is not quite a letter. The crossword tests this directly. Every square on the grid has to be the same size, every black fill opaque, every painted letter legible at arm's length, which means the brush tip is essentially a single bristle. The studio does not expect anyone to solve the painted grid. It expects anyone who picks up the ornament to look at the letters and believe they could, and that belief requires each character to be convincing on a surface the size of a sesame seed.

Frequently asked questions

Where can I buy a Crossword ornament online?

You can buy a Crossword Ornament online at chive.com, where the hand-blown glass grid ships with painted letters and black squares already filled in by a painter who used a single-bristle brush for the lettering. Agnes ordered hers mid-puzzle on a Tuesday morning, paused the crossword to complete the checkout, and returned to the puzzle. The ornament arrived before her weekly average dropped.

Is the Crossword ornament a good stocking stuffer?

The Crossword Ornament is a strong stocking stuffer because its flat profile slips into the stocking cleanly and the recipient reaches in and feels the grid shape through the glass and knows immediately they have been understood as a puzzle person, which is one of the better things a stocking can communicate. Agnes says the shape announces itself. She is correct about shapes.

Is the Crossword ornament a good gift idea?

The Crossword Ornament is a good gift for the person who starts the puzzle before the coffee, who owns a specific pen for the task, and who considers the Sunday grid a weekly appointment rather than a pastime. Agnes would add that it belongs to anyone who finishes in pen. She considers this the relevant qualification and does not elaborate further.

What material is the Crossword ornament made of?

The Crossword Ornament is made from hand-blown glass that was pressed flat while still workable, then painted with a grid of black and white squares and individual letter characters applied with a brush fine enough to render text on a surface under three inches across. Agnes examined hers with reading glasses and reported the letter formation was consistent. The paint is permanent.

How tall is the Crossword christmas tree ornament?

The Crossword christmas tree ornament measures approximately 2.36 inches wide, 0.79 inches deep, and 2.95 inches tall, making it one of the more compact ornaments in the collection and proportioned like a folded newspaper puzzle section. Agnes appreciates the scale because it fits in a reading-chair display she maintains beside the tree. The flat shape hangs flush against branches.

How do I keep the Crossword ornament safe in storage?

Keep the Crossword Ornament safe in storage by wrapping it flat in acid-free tissue and placing it in a compartment where nothing presses against the painted grid face. Agnes stores hers between two sheets of felt in a drawer she reserved exclusively for flat ornaments, because Agnes has a category for everything and flat ornaments are a category. Protect the letter detail from abrasion.

Do you have more music and hobby ornaments like the Crossword?

Chive makes a full range of music and hobby ornaments that honor the pursuits people take as seriously as their professions, including puzzles, instruments, and the creative tools that fill the hours between obligations. Agnes has reviewed the collection carefully and reports it respects the hobbyist. She offers this endorsement with characteristic restraint.

Does the Crossword ornament come in a gift box?

The Crossword Ornament does not come in a gift box but ships in protective wrapping that holds the flat glass grid securely against transit damage. Agnes received hers with every letter intact and every black square fully opaque, which she verified systematically before placing it on the tree because Agnes verifies things systematically. Chive packs for protection rather than ceremony.
