There's No Such Thing as Just One Ornament

Pick a favorite. Then accept that "just one" was never really an option.

Built as our firefighter ornament for the person who always answers the call, no matter the hour, the Fire Hydrant Ornament stands in hand-blown glass, painted the same red you would expect from the real thing on a real corner downtown. The rounded body is blown first, then the bonnet, caps, and bolts get outlined in enamel-bright hand-painted layers before the piece is capped off and finished, ready to hang on any branch that will hold it. The hydrant does nothing visibly and simply waits, which reads as either patience or purpose, and it has never bothered, not once, to distinguish between the two, because for the hydrant the two amount to the exact same job, every single time. Hang this for whoever stands steady, who shows up ready when it actually matters and never once makes a production of it. TIFF has never made a film about a fire hydrant, which honestly feels like an oversight somebody at the festival should correct.

The Story Behind This Ornament

My neighbor Walt has walked the same six blocks every morning for eleven years, rain or shine, and he has a name for the fire hydrant on the corner of Maple and Ninth, which he calls the Sentinel, entirely without embarrassment, in casual conversation, as though this were a completely normal thing for a grown man to name a piece of municipal infrastructure. He says the Sentinel has been there longer than most of the houses on the block, has personally outlasted at least two total renovations, one very bad paint decision from the eighties, and an entire decade of arguments about whether the block should have speed bumps, and has never once looked anything other than exactly ready for whatever the morning happened to bring. Walt does not know for certain if the Sentinel has ever actually been used in an actual emergency. He hopes it has not had to be, and also hopes that if it ever does have to be, it performs exactly as advertised, without hesitation, the way it has apparently been standing there prepared to do since long before Walt started walking past it every single morning of his adult life, rain, shine, or otherwise.

Care Tips

Storage Do’s and Don’ts:

(Because Yes, They’re Fragile)

  • Do wrap each ornament individually in soft tissue paper, bubble wrap, or a gentle cloth. (No, shoving them in a shoebox with tinsel does not count.)
  • Don’t let them clink around in a box together. That’s a recipe for heartbreak and glittery shards.
  • Do store them in a sturdy container (plastic bins with dividers = chef’s kiss) and keep it in a cool, dry place — no attics or sketchy basements, please.

Pro Tip: Label the box like your life depends on it.

Write it on every side, not just the top, since nobody unloading a truck reads the top first. If you're storing these for next year, do future you a favor and note what's inside beyond just "ornaments." A little specificity now saves a lot of bubble wrap archaeology in eleven months.

Ceramic Flowers That Never Wilt

An ornament celebrates something for a month; a ceramic flower does it all year. Chive's ceramic flowers are hand-built stems that never wilt, never need water, and never stop being the thing people comment on when they visit. If the Fire Hydrant is for whoever stands ready without making a production of it, the flowers are for whoever keeps things going quietly all year round. Same shelf, different season, zero maintenance. The two get along better than you would think.

About Chive Studio

A factory can stamp out identical red cylinders all day and call it finished, and we have never been interested in that shortcut, because the real charm of a fire hydrant is the slightly imperfect, hand-finished character a factory line never quite captures. Every one of these ornaments we've made since Chive opened in 2004 was shaped by somebody standing at a torch with a brush in hand, not an assembly line, which takes longer and is occasionally more stubborn but produces something with real presence. Ceramic flowers get that identical hands-on attention come spring. The hand never once leaves any of it here at the studio, corner-standing hydrants very much included in that.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best firefighter ornament to buy?

The Fire Hydrant ornament ranks among the best firefighter ornaments to buy, in hand-blown glass painted the same red as the real thing. My neighbor Walt has walked the same six blocks every single morning for eleven years and has a name for the hydrant on his route, which he calls the Sentinel, entirely without embarrassment. Walt does not care what you think.

Would the Fire Hydrant ornament make a great secret santa pick?

It works especially well for secret santa, when you're buying for someone you barely know yet at all. Walt says the Sentinel has outlasted two total renovations and one very bad paint decision from the eighties without ever once looking anything other than exactly ready. A hydrant reads as funny, safely, for almost anyone in the office.

Who should I buy the Fire Hydrant ornament for?

Buy it for whoever shows up ready without ever making a production out of it. Walt does not actually know if the Sentinel has ever been used, and hopes, if it has to be someday, it performs exactly as advertised without hesitation. That's the specific kind of quiet readiness this ornament is built to honor.

How is the Fire Hydrant glass ornament actually made?

The rounded body is blown first, then the bonnet, caps, and bolts are outlined afterward in enamel-bright hand-painted layers. Walt has never once seen the actual Sentinel repainted in eleven years of walking past it every morning, though he suspects the city has quietly touched it up more than once without telling him. This version starts entirely fresh.

What are the dimensions of the Fire Hydrant ornament?

The Fire Hydrant ornament measures about 4.7 inches tall with a 2.6-inch diameter. Walt has never actually measured the real Sentinel himself, on principle, insisting some things around the neighborhood are better left slightly mysterious forever. This glass version, at least, holds still long enough to actually check.

How do I clean and care for the Fire Hydrant ornament?

Dust it gently with a soft, dry cloth, nothing damp. Walt has never once cleaned the actual Sentinel himself, considering that strictly a city matter and not really his business to interfere with. This ornament, being entirely his own property now, gets slightly more attention than that municipal arrangement ever allows.

What funny ornaments pair well with the Fire Hydrant?

The Rainbow Bolt ornament pairs naturally alongside it, bringing a very different kind of energy to the same corner. Walt would probably just nod at the bolt and keep right on walking, same as every single morning. Browse the Funny ornament collection for the rest of that same deadpan lineup.

Does the Fire Hydrant ornament ship in protective gift packaging?

It ships in genuinely protective packaging rather than a presentation gift box, built to keep the paint intact. Walt has never once needed to protect the actual Sentinel from anything at all, having survived eleven years of his own morning walks completely undisturbed. This one just needs a little bubble wrap around it.

A Promise Fresh Flowers Can't Keep

Fresh flowers make a promise they cannot keep. A Chive ceramic flower skips the wilting and arrives with the kind of presence that suggests someone spent real time choosing it, whether or not that is true. No water. No sunlight. No expiration date to plan around.
