Build Your Floral Wall With These:

Designed to cluster naturally, like a wild garden. Choose a flower as your design anchor, then grow your custom floral wall with these companions:

Protea flower meaning shows up clearly in the Blue White King Protea, which grew up — at least in spirit — in the yard out in Sconset, the corner of Nantucket where everyone plants roses because everyone always has and probably always will. This one didn't. The neighbors noticed and said nothing, which on that particular island counts as considerably louder than saying something out loud. Styled as bold beach decor, the protea keeps its blue-and-white finish without watering or seasonal upkeep, unbothered by convention same as it's always been. A meaningful gift for a cancer survivor should carry that same refusal to bend to what everyone else quietly expects. Chive's artisans have been shaping ceramic pieces like this by hand for two decades, since 2004. Chive ceramics have made their way through the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame shop before. The roses next door made their point. The protea never noticed.

How to hang & display

Wall hanging

Works on drywall, plaster, or wood panelling. Drive a small screw at a slight upward angle, leaving the head proud of the wall. Slide the keyhole slot on the back over the screw head, adjust to level. Sits flush — no visible hardware.

No stud? No problem. A drywall anchor rated for the weight works fine.

Displaying a collection

Lay everything out on the floor first. Start with your anchor piece, build outward. Keep 2–3 inches between each piece and aim for the centre of the whole arrangement to land around eye level. Use painter's tape on the wall to map positions before committing to any screws.

Table & shelf display: Equally beautiful propped on a shelf, mantle, or side table. Pair with books, candles, or a small pot.

Ivory Chrysanthemum ceramic wall flower styled on wall — Coastal Collection — Chive Studio Toronto

Unique coastal decor, original flower designs in 200+ art galleries and institutions worldwide

Growing up in Sconset — the part of Nantucket where, if you know the island at all, you know everyone plants roses, because everyone has always planted roses and the social agreement around that choice predates anyone currently living on that stretch of land — one household planted King Proteas instead of following suit. The neighbors noticed immediately. They said nothing about it, which on that particular stretch of island is considerably louder than saying something out loud would have ever been. The proteas, for their part, did not register the disapproval in any way whatsoever. Proteas have existed on this planet since long before the concept of neighbors, property lines, or unspoken landscaping agreements ever existed, and they've never once adjusted their growing habits to accommodate any of it. Blue and white, in this ceramic version, just means they look composed while doing exactly what they'd do regardless of anyone's opinion on the matter. That's the whole spirit behind this piece: not rebellion exactly, just a total absence of interest in what the neighboring rose bushes think about the situation next door. The proteas were never trying to make a point. They simply never noticed there was a point to be made about them at all.

Designed to Share the Same Room

Ivory Comanche Peony ceramic wall flower styled on wall — Coastal Collection — Chive Studio Toronto

Group two or three pieces from this blue set together and the pattern starts doing more work than any single one manages alone. This protea's quiet defiance shares a shelf naturally with the Ivory Comanche Peony, another bold structural shape that holds its own in any grouped wall arrangement without much effort required at all.

Blue White Lexi Cornflower ceramic wall flower styled on wall — Coastal Collection — Chive Studio Toronto

Every Chive ceramic flower works two ways: mounted vertically as a growing gallery wall, or laid flat as a no-water tablescape. This protea's architectural structure anchors a grouped wall arrangement especially well, holding real visual weight against smaller, more delicate blooms chosen from other pieces nearby, with no need to fight for the same attention at all. Positioned centrally, it gives a multi-piece arrangement a clear focal point rather than a scattered, even distribution. Shop the full Coastal Collection

The smaller 3-inch Tika Pot and Saucer stays compact enough that it never pulls focus away from this protea's own architectural, attention-holding wall structure above it at all times. A quieter companion piece at a noticeably lower height gives the eye a resting point without competing against the protea's own built-in refusal to blend in with anything else nearby on the shelf.

The Safe Color Was Never Safe. — Coastal Collection.

A studio that's been running for two decades develops habits nobody questions anymore, and shaping every piece entirely by hand, with zero automated shortcuts, is one of them at Chive. That's been true since the doors first opened in 2004 and remains true through six full collections built since then. Speed was never really the goal. Consistency of process, even without consistency of outcome, has mattered more the entire time. How a finished piece eventually turns out has never changed how much care goes into starting it. This particular protea is one clear result of that same unhurried habit, shaped with the same care the studio has applied since its very first year.

Frequently asked questions

How does a Blue White King Protea hang on the wall?

Mounting the Blue White King Protea takes one screw and a couple of minutes of effort — the hanging catch sits pre-balanced in the rear, skipping the need for a level check entirely. No wire system or extra bracket to source first. Most walls, drywall included, handle it without a stud finder.

What does a protea flower mean as a gift?

A protea flower means courage and transformation as a gift, which fits particularly well against this piece's own backstory of quietly ignoring social convention entirely, roses and all included in that. The blue-and-white glaze adds a composed finish to a flower known for its bold, almost defiant structure in nature overall.

Is a ceramic protea a good gift for strength?

Strength as a concept gets attached to a lot of gifts without much thought behind it, but a protea actually earns the association through its own growing habits — resilient, structural, unbothered by harsh conditions. This ceramic version carries that same symbolism permanently, without ever needing water or care to keep meaning it.

Does a blue and white protea work as bold beach decor?

Bold beach decor calls for at least one piece willing to take up real visual space rather than blending quietly into the background. This protea's architectural structure does exactly that, standing out clearly against smaller, more delicate blooms nearby. It reads as a genuine statement rather than a background accent.

What ships inside the box with a King Protea order?

The King Protea's shipping box is built to work as the actual gift box, skipping the rewrapping step most florist deliveries still require. A short card explains the single-screw mount inside. Nothing else has to be purchased first — it's ready to hang the same day it arrives. No tools beyond a basic screwdriver are genuinely required here.

What is a meaningful gift for a cancer survivor?

Something given to a cancer survivor should carry genuine symbolic weight, and the protea's reputation for resilience and transformation does exactly that without feeling heavy-handed about it in the process at all. This ceramic version never wilts, reinforcing the sentiment in a lasting, physical form rather than a fading bouquet.

How long does a ceramic protea last versus a fresh king protea?

A real king protea can hold its structure for close to two weeks after being cut, longer than most florist flowers manage. But two weeks still ends eventually, with browning bracts and a trip to the trash. This piece never reaches that point — same shape, same color, indefinitely, with nothing to maintain along the way.

Is a ceramic protea a good gift for someone facing illness?

Someone navigating a serious illness benefits from a gift that carries genuine weight without feeling heavy-handed about the sentiment behind it. The protea's long-standing symbolic tie to courage and transformation does exactly that quietly. Because it never fades, the reminder stays present far longer than any bouquet's brief lifespan ever could.
