The glass is blown as one hollow form so the duck keeps its rounded bath-toy proportions instead of the flatter shape a mold would produce, a small technical choice most buyers never consciously register even as they pick the piece up and turn it over in their hands. The Story Behind This Ornament

My aunt Beatrix has taken a bath with a rubber duck present in the water every single week of her adult life, a fact she will state plainly if asked and defend at length if challenged, on the grounds that a bath without a duck is just standing water with extra steps. She is sixty-one. She owns eleven ducks currently in active rotation and considers this a modest collection compared to a coworker she describes, with real disapproval, as 'excessive.' When we started shaping this ornament in a shade of pink nobody expected instead of yellow, Beatrix was, unusually for her, the very first person consulted, on the theory that if anyone in the family had earned veto power over duck matters it was her. She approved the color within about four seconds flat, said the shape needed to be rounder at the base to actually float correctly on a real bathtub if anyone ever tried it themselves, and was, once we checked with an actual engineer, completely right about the physics of it. She keeps this ornament on the tree year-round now, technically off-season by any calendar, on the grounds that a good duck does not need a holiday to justify its presence anywhere in a home, tree or no tree, season or no season.

  • Do wrap each ornament individually in soft tissue paper, bubble wrap, or a gentle cloth. (No, shoving them in a shoebox with tinsel does not count.)
  • Don’t let them clink around in a box together. That’s a recipe for heartbreak and glittery shards.
  • Do store them in a sturdy container (plastic bins with dividers = chef’s kiss) and keep it in a cool, dry place — no attics or sketchy basements, please.

Pro Tip: Label the box like your life depends on it.

Chive treats a Christmas ornament as something a household keeps for decades, not a single season, and builds accordingly, an approach that traces back to 2004 when the studio's ceramic flowers were first pitched as pieces meant to outlast a passing trend entirely. A duck-shaped ornament could easily be treated as disposable, cheap, replaceable next year without a second thought; this one is not built that way, on purpose, at every stage of production.
