There's No Such Thing as Just One Ornament

Pick a favorite. Then accept that "just one" was never really an option.

The Pizza Slice Ornament is our pizza ornament for the person with strong, specific, occasionally combative opinions about toppings, a hand-blown glass slice hand-painted down to the individual pepperoni. Each pepperoni is applied as its own small dot of color after the cheese layer sets, a step that takes considerably longer than anyone glancing at the finished piece would ever guess from a few feet away, and the crust gets a separate shading pass to read as genuinely browned rather than flat orange. Somewhere out there is a doorway, at a specific hour, in weather that was fully committed to being terrible, where someone ate the best slice of their entire life for three dollars and has never stopped comparing every subsequent meal to it, unfavorably and without apology, no matter how much the meal cost. They know exactly which doorway it was. Buy this for them. Finish like this belongs on a shelf at ROM, earned one pepperoni at a time.

The Story Behind This Ornament

My friend Nico ate a slice of pizza standing in a doorway in New York at eleven thirty at night in rain that had fully committed to being rain, and describes it, unprompted, to this day, as the best meal of his life, ahead of several anniversary dinners he has also, separately, described as the best meal of his life, a contradiction he has never once been asked to resolve and would resist resolving if pressed, ever, by anyone, including his own wife. The slice cost three dollars. The doorway belonged to a shuttered dry cleaner two blocks from his old apartment. Nico has told this story at two separate weddings, both times during the toast, both times to full and genuine laughter, because the story is good and because everyone who has ever stood in a doorway eating something perfect in bad weather recognizes it immediately as their own. When we shaped this ornament we shaded the crust the way a slice actually browns, unevenly, because Nico would have said something if it looked airbrushed, and Nico says something about almost everything, cheerfully, whether or not the room has asked for his opinion on the matter. He has three of these on his tree already. He is already planning where the fourth one goes, out loud, at length.

Care Tips

Storage Do’s and Don’ts:

(Because Yes, They’re Fragile)

  • Do wrap each ornament individually in soft tissue paper, bubble wrap, or a gentle cloth. (No, shoving them in a shoebox with tinsel does not count.)
  • Don’t let them clink around in a box together. That’s a recipe for heartbreak and glittery shards.
  • Do store them in a sturdy container (plastic bins with dividers = chef’s kiss) and keep it in a cool, dry place — no attics or sketchy basements, please.

Pro Tip: Label the box like your life depends on it.

Write it on every side, not just the top, since nobody unloading a truck reads the top first. If you're storing these for next year, do future you a favor and note what's inside beyond just "ornaments." A little specificity now saves a lot of bubble wrap archaeology in eleven months.

Ornaments Are a Great Gift. We Have Opinions About the Rest.

Our Food & Drink collection is a menu of the things people love without apology, rendered in hand-painted glass. Add the Sprinkle Donuts Ornament if the tree still has room for a second course.

Hand-Blown Glass Christmas Ornaments

Hand-painted glass rewards the close look, and every Chive ornament is made to be inspected at arm's length — the distance where trees are actually enjoyed. This slice holds its own under scrutiny, pepperoni dots and all. The full spread lives at Food & Drink Christmas Ornaments, finished with the same individual care.

Ceramic Flowers That Never Wilt

A slice disappears in minutes; a ceramic flower from Chive does the opposite and remains exactly where you set it, permanently, with no moisture and no upkeep in the picture at any point. Individual petals are formed by hand and fired until the glaze is fixed for good — the same fussy attention to small details behind every single painted pepperoni on this ornament. See the spread at Ceramic Flowers.

About Chive Studio

The founders had one rule from the very beginning about softening detail for retail scale, and the rule was: don't. Since 2004, growth has meant more products, more categories, and eventually more glass ornaments than anyone on staff that first year would have predicted, but it has never meant trimming the fussy, time-consuming details that make a piece worth keeping. A pepperoni ornament with flat, uniform dots would sell fine and cost less to make; nobody at the studio has ever seriously proposed it. Each dot goes on individually, the crust gets its own shading pass, and the piece takes as long as it takes, scale or no scale, quarter after quarter, without exception.

Frequently asked questions

Do you have a pizza ornament for the christmas tree?

Chive makes a pizza ornament for the christmas tree in hand-blown glass, hand-painted down to the individual pepperoni with a separately shaded crust. My friend Nico, who has opinions about pizza that he treats as moral positions, confirmed that the proportions look deliberate rather than decorative. From Nico, that counts as a rave.

Is the Pizza Slice ornament a good stocking stuffer?

The Pizza Slice ornament is a good stocking stuffer because it is light, compact, and provokes an immediate reaction from anyone who finds it at the bottom of the stocking. Nico once received a pizza stone as a stocking stuffer and gave a toast about it at the table, unprompted, to a room that had not asked. This one inspires similar feeling.

Who would love the Pizza Slice ornament as a gift?

Buy the Pizza Slice ornament for whoever has a doorway story — a specific place, a specific hour, a specific slice that was better than anything that came before or after, for reasons that had nothing to do with the recipe. Nico has told his version at two separate weddings, to full and genuine laughter both times. You already know yours.

What material is the Pizza Slice ornament made of?

The Pizza Slice ornament is made of hand-blown glass, with each pepperoni painted as an individual dot and the crust given a separate shading pass for a browned, uneven look. Nico inspected one at close range and said the crust looked honest, a word he uses exclusively for food and never for people. The glass is durable under normal handling.

What size is the Pizza Slice christmas ornament?

The Pizza Slice christmas ornament measures approximately 2.68 inches long, 0.91 inches wide, and 4.13 inches tall, thin enough to hang between branches without crowding them. Nico held one against an actual slice for scale, briefly, before eating the actual slice, because Nico's commitment to research has clear and reasonable limits.

How should I store the Pizza Slice ornament after christmas?

Wrap the Pizza Slice ornament in soft tissue and set it inside a small rigid container for off-season storage, keeping it separate from anything heavier. Nico stores his alongside a collection of food-related objects his wife describes as a cabinet that needs cleaning and he describes as curated. A dry shelf does the job.

Do you have more food and drink ornaments like the Pizza Slice?

The Food and Drink collection runs from donuts and burgers to champagne bottles and fries, all hand-blown glass finished to the same standard as this pizza. Nico has already assigned specific ornaments to specific friends based on their usual restaurant orders, a gifting plan only he understands but considers generous. Browse the full menu at /collections/food-christmas-ornaments.

Does the Pizza Slice ornament come in a gift box?

The Pizza Slice ornament does not come in a gift box, arriving in protective packaging designed for safe transit to your door. Nico wraps gifts in newspaper, specifically the food section, on the grounds that the medium should match the message, a position his family has stopped contesting. The wrapping is yours to sort out.

A Promise Fresh Flowers Can't Keep

Fresh flowers make a promise they cannot keep. A Chive ceramic flower skips the wilting and arrives with the kind of presence that suggests someone spent real time choosing it, whether or not that is true. No water. No sunlight. No expiration date to plan around.
