There's No Such Thing as Just One Ornament

Pick a favorite. Then accept that "just one" was never really an option.

The Potato Chips Bag Ornament is a foil snack bag in blown glass, crimped along the top seam, puffed through the middle, its metallic silver and yellow catching light exactly as the foil original does beneath a fluorescent tube. Rendering something disposable is the expensive brief. A bag has to look flimsy, and flimsy is not a shortcut in glass: the crimp, the slack in the belly, the slight lean it takes on the hook are each a decision, and they cost more between them than a symmetrical object ever would. It measures a little over two and a third inches wide. My brother-in-law Dermot eats chips exclusively from the bag and holds firm views about people who decant them into a bowl, views he shares. TIFF takes over ordinary blocks of a working city for eleven days, then hands them back, which is a fair argument that worth follows the attention pointed at a thing rather than what the thing cost.

The Story Behind This Ornament

My brother-in-law Dermot eats chips exclusively from the bag and holds firm views about people who decant them into a bowl. The views are available on request and also otherwise. A bowl, he says, is a decision to stop, and a bag is the absence of one, and anybody who reaches for a bowl has already lost the evening on a technicality. He has never once been asked to elaborate and has elaborated at every gathering I have attended since roughly 2011. The genuinely irritating part is the sound argument buried in the middle of it, which is that the bag keeps the chips right, and the bowl gives you a plate of stale chips within an hour. He is correct about this. Nobody grants it to him. Making a bag out of glass turns out to be the expensive end of the catalog, because the whole job is convincing an object with real weight to look like one with none. The crimp along the top, the slack through the belly, the slight tilt it takes on the hook are all decided rather than found, and every one of them is a separate argument at the bench. Dermot examined the crimp for some time and then asked, entirely seriously, whether the bag opened.

Care Tips

Storage Do’s and Don’ts:

(Because Yes, They’re Fragile)

  • Do wrap each ornament individually in soft tissue paper, bubble wrap, or a gentle cloth. (No, shoving them in a shoebox with tinsel does not count.)
  • Don’t let them clink around in a box together. That’s a recipe for heartbreak and glittery shards.
  • Do store them in a sturdy container (plastic bins with dividers = chef’s kiss) and keep it in a cool, dry place — no attics or sketchy basements, please.

Pro Tip: Label the box like your life depends on it.

Write it on every side, not just the top, since nobody unloading a truck reads the top first. If you're storing these for next year, do future you a favor and note what's inside beyond just "ornaments." A little specificity now saves a lot of bubble wrap archaeology in eleven months.

Our Food & Drink collection is a menu of the things people love without apology, rendered in hand-painted glass.Everything in here arrives in some kind of wrapper. This one is the wrapper. The Breakfast Waffle ornament arrives on a plate instead.

Hand-Blown Glass Christmas Ornaments

Hand-painted glass rewards the close look, and every Chive ornament is made to be inspected at arm's length — the distance where trees are actually enjoyed.Crease and slack are the two things a bag has to get right, and both of them vanish in a thumbnail. Every one of the Food & Drink ornaments is made for the nearer look.

Ceramic Flowers That Never Wilt

A version of this argument runs right through our flower range. Our ceramic flowers cost more than a supermarket bunch and are the cheaper option by the second month, which is an unromantic thing to say about a flower and happens to be true. Every stem is shaped and painted by hand in fired ceramic. They ask nothing of you afterward, which is more than can be said for most objects that turn up looking this good.

About Chive Studio

What we have been doing since 2004 is hand-painting blown glass, which turns out to be the only honest way to render something built to be thrown away. The disposable subjects are the expensive ones. A bag, a wrapper, a paper cup: each has to look weightless, creased, and faintly cheap, and none of those qualities is a shortcut. Symmetry is cheap. Slack is not. Every deliberate imperfection on a piece like this is a decision made twice, once at the bench and once at the paint table, and the finished object costs more to make than several of the handsome, upright designs it hangs beside. We have been asked why we bother. Because a snack bag sits on more kitchen counters than any centerpiece we have ever made, and rating our attention by how dignified a subject is would be a strange way to run a catalog.

Frequently asked questions

Do you sell a Potato Chips Bag ornament for christmas trees?

We do, and it hangs from a standard cap and loop like everything else here. It is a foil bag rendered in blown glass, crimped along the top and puffed through the middle, and it is one of the more expensive things in the range to make. My brother-in-law Dermot found that fact enormously satisfying. He tells people.

Is the Potato Chips Bag ornament a good stocking stuffer?

It is, and it is the one thing in there that survives the audit. A stocking gets quietly triaged over the following days: the candy goes, the socks vanish into a drawer, the novelties reach a bin by February. An ornament gets boxed with the others and comes back next year. Dermot still has his from 2019. Nothing else survived.

Who would enjoy getting the Potato Chips Bag ornament?

Somebody who eats out of the bag and is unrepentant about it. There is an entire personality attached to this and every family contains one. Dermot holds that a bowl is a decision to stop and a bag is the absence of one, a position he has never been asked to defend and defends constantly. He would love this. He got one.

Is the Potato Chips Bag ornament real glass?

Real blown glass, hand-painted, which is the joke of the thing: it takes considerably more work to make something look flimsy than to make it look solid. The crimp, the slack through the belly and the slight lean on the hook are all deliberate. Dermot did not believe it was glass until he took the weight of it. Then he went quiet.

How tall is the Potato Chips Bag christmas tree ornament?

It stands 3.54 inches tall and 2.36 inches wide, which is a genuine bag rather than a miniature one, and it is broad enough to want a little room either side. The puffed middle is the widest point. Dermot compared his to an actual bag and reported the proportions as accurate. He then ate the actual bag.

How should I store the Potato Chips Bag ornament?

Wrap it around the body rather than the crimped top, because the crimp is the thinnest glass on the piece and takes any pressure first. Lay it flat with tissue underneath instead of standing it on end. Dermot stores his in the original packaging, which he kept, and regards this as a personal triumph over his household. It probably is.

What pairs well with the Potato Chips Bag ornament?

Anything else that arrives in its own wrapper. Half the food range is plated or served and the other half comes packaged, and hanging the packaged ones together gives you a branch that reads as a shop shelf rather than a table. It is a real distinction once you have seen it. Dermot sees it and points at it. Repeatedly.

Does the Potato Chips Bag ornament arrive gift boxed?

No, it does not arrive gift boxed. It ships in protective transit packaging built to get a thin-walled bag shape through the post without a crushed crimp, which is a different job and the one that actually matters. Dermot claimed the packaging was better engineered than the ornament, then hung the ornament and kept the packaging. Both remain in use.

A Promise Fresh Flowers Can't Keep

Fresh flowers make a promise they cannot keep. A Chive ceramic flower skips the wilting and arrives with the kind of presence that suggests someone spent real time choosing it, whether or not that is true. No water. No sunlight. No expiration date to plan around.
