There's No Such Thing as Just One Ornament

Pick a favorite. Then accept that "just one" was never really an option.

Shoe ornaments rarely commit to a mood the way this one does — a rainbow platform boot rendered in hand-painted glass, built tall enough on the hanger to actually take up real space on a branch. The extra height was never about being seen; it's about standing exactly where the wearer already planned to stand, which the platform boot has understood since the day it first showed up at the back of a closet somewhere. Whoever takes this home tends to take the room too — you notice the moment they've walked in, and you notice again after they've left, because the room stays slightly different for a while afterward. Hang this for the person who found the extra height correct rather than excessive, the one the boot was clearly designed around from the very beginning. Somewhere in the Royal Ontario Museum a placard is waiting to read ceremonial footwear, provenance confidence — this boot walks in that tradition, several inches above it.

The Story Behind This Ornament

My friend Zora owned actual platform boots in her twenties, and she describes those years as the only period of her life when her height matched her intentions. She wore them to job interviews. She wore them to a funeral once, and the widow thanked her afterward, saying the deceased would have approved of anyone brave enough to be that tall on purpose. Zora walks into rooms the way weather walks into a forecast — announced, unavoidable, and generally improving the conversation — and she has never once apologized for taking up the space she planned to take up. When Zora unwrapped the boot she recognized it the way people recognize old photographs of themselves, with a short laugh and then a question about where I had been hiding it. She hung it dead center on her tree, moved two other ornaments to give it clearance, and stood back to check the sightline from the couch, which is the seat guests use. The rainbow bands, she pointed out, hold their edges even up close, and she inspected them the way she once inspected the real thing in a shop mirror. The boots are gone now, donated in a move she still regrets. The altitude, she wants it known, never left.

Care Tips

Storage Do’s and Don’ts:

(Because Yes, They’re Fragile)

  • Do wrap each ornament individually in soft tissue paper, bubble wrap, or a gentle cloth. (No, shoving them in a shoebox with tinsel does not count.)
  • Don’t let them clink around in a box together. That’s a recipe for heartbreak and glittery shards.
  • Do store them in a sturdy container (plastic bins with dividers = chef’s kiss) and keep it in a cool, dry place — no attics or sketchy basements, please.

Pro Tip: Label the box like your life depends on it.

Write it on every side, not just the top, since nobody unloading a truck reads the top first. If you're storing these for next year, do future you a favor and note what's inside beyond just "ornaments." A little specificity now saves a lot of bubble wrap archaeology in eleven months.

More Funny Christmas Ornaments

Our Funny collection hangs the household's sense of humor at eye level, one hand-painted glass punchline at a time. Pair the boot with the Pink Lips Ornament and the tree develops a personality overnight.

Hand-Blown Glass Christmas Ornaments

Hand-painted glass rewards the close look, and every Chive ornament is made to be inspected at arm's length — the distance where trees are actually enjoyed. The color bands hold their edges even at nose distance, which took some doing. March the rest of our funny glass ornaments up the tree behind it.

Ceramic Flowers That Never Wilt

Anything this colorful deserves company after the holidays end. Our ceramic flowers carry the same fearless palette into the other eleven months — hand-crafted blooms in shades nature approves of and several it hasn't gotten around to yet, none of which fade or wilt. They are what this studio first became known for, and they hold a room's attention the way the boot holds a branch: completely, and on purpose.

About Chive Studio

Founded in 2004, Chive has spent the years since building a catalog for people who decorate on their own terms. We began with ceramic flowers; the hand-painted glass ornaments arrived once it became obvious that our customers' trees were autobiographies — every branch a chapter, every ornament an inside joke or a small monument to somebody specific. Color is our native language here: each shade on this boot was mixed by hand, applied by hand, banded clean, and checked against the one beside it before the piece moved down the bench. If your tree ends up looking like everyone else's, we have failed you, and we do not intend to fail you.

Frequently asked questions

Where can I buy a shoe ornaments online?

You can buy a shoe ornaments upgrade right here — the Rainbow Platform Boot, hand-painted glass with every color band edged clean. I bought the first one for my friend Zora, who owned real platforms in her twenties and describes those years as her correct altitude. She recognized it before the wrapping was fully off. Instantly, actually.

Would the Rainbow Platform Boot ornament make a great secret santa pick?

The Rainbow Platform Boot ornament makes a perfect secret santa pick for the coworker with a documented personality. My friend Zora keeps a running list of gifts she intends to receive someday, and this boot, it turned out, had been on it for over a year. Her santa had no idea. The list is never shown. It simply gets satisfied.

Who should I buy the Rainbow Platform Boot ornament for?

Buy the Rainbow Platform Boot ornament for whoever takes the room when they enter it. For me that is Zora, who refers to flat shoes as ground level and to herself, on formal occasions, as the skyline. She hung this before her coat was fully off, and the tree adjusted around it immediately. Trees generally do.

How is the Rainbow Platform Boot glass ornament actually made?

The Rainbow Platform Boot glass ornament is made by shaping hot glass, cooling it, and hand-painting each color band separately until the stack sits crisp. My friend Zora inspected the band edges the way she once inspected the real thing in shop mirrors, and found the stripes held their lines even at her nose distance. I watched her check them. She was thorough.

What are the dimensions of the Rainbow Platform Boot ornament?

The Rainbow Platform Boot ornament stands 4.65 inches tall and 2.76 inches wide — genuinely tall for an ornament, true to its source. Zora did the scale math out loud when I told her the height, converting it to real-boot inches with alarming speed. The proportions check out, she reports, and she wore the originals for a decade. She would know.

How do I clean and care for the Rainbow Platform Boot ornament?

Clean and care for the Rainbow Platform Boot ornament with a soft, dry cloth only — no water, no sprays near the painted bands. Zora dusts hers before every party, top to sole, a ritual I once teased her about and now perform on my own, because the gloss repays it. She had it right, as usual.

What funny ornaments pair well with the Rainbow Platform Boot?

The Pink Lips and the Pink Sneaker Glass are the funny ornaments that pair best with the Rainbow Platform Boot. Zora assembled all three into what she calls the entrance committee, positioned where guests arrive. My contribution was the sneaker. She reminds me it completes the set, then repositions it slightly. Every year. Slightly.

Does the Rainbow Platform Boot ornament ship in protective gift packaging?

The Rainbow Platform Boot ornament ships in protective tissue inside a sturdy carton — not a gift box, since the tall profile needs padding at both ends more than it needs presentation. Zora's arrived with every band intact. I supplied the ribbon at her door, thirty seconds flat. The boot supplied everything else. It always does.

A Promise Fresh Flowers Can't Keep

Fresh flowers make a promise they cannot keep. A Chive ceramic flower skips the wilting and arrives with the kind of presence that suggests someone spent real time choosing it, whether or not that is true. No water. No sunlight. No expiration date to plan around.
