The Story Behind This Ornament

The turtle carries its house on its back and moves at the pace it selected two hundred million years ago and has never revised. It arrives. It has always arrived. The speed was never the issue and anyone who thinks it was has been measuring the wrong variable. My friend Dale walks to the grocery store that is eleven minutes away by car because he decided years ago that the walk was the point and the groceries were incidental. Dale does not own a watch. He owned one once and said it made him anxious, not because he was late but because it suggested the possibility of lateness, which was a concept he had already rejected on principle. He gets to the store when he gets to the store. The avocados are still there. They do not leave. Dale and the avocados have an understanding that requires no coordination and no urgency and no watch. His wife says he is the slowest person she has ever loved and she says it the way you say something that started as a complaint and became a compliment when you were not paying attention. This ornament records Dale's philosophy in glass and hangs it on a branch where it will not be rushed.

Storage Do’s and Don’ts:

(Because Yes, They’re Fragile)

  • Do wrap each ornament individually in soft tissue paper, bubble wrap, or a gentle cloth. (No, shoving them in a shoebox with tinsel does not count.)
  • Don’t let them clink around in a box together. That’s a recipe for heartbreak and glittery shards.
  • Do store them in a sturdy container (plastic bins with dividers = chef’s kiss) and keep it in a cool, dry place — no attics or sketchy basements, please.

Pro Tip: Label the box like your life depends on it.

Write it on every side, not just the top, since nobody unloading a truck reads the top first. If you're storing these for next year, do future you a favor and note what's inside beyond just "ornaments." A little specificity now saves a lot of bubble wrap archaeology in eleven months.

Chive started in 2004 and has not been in a hurry since, which is less a marketing position than an operational fact about hand-blown glass: it cannot be rushed and we learned that early and built everything around it. Our artisans blow each ornament one at a time, paint each surface by hand, then fix the hanging hardware when the piece is cool and the work is done correctly. Dale would approve of the pace. We began designing ceramic flowers and added ornaments after noticing the people who bought handmade flowers were the same people who wanted handmade glass for their trees. Care recognizes care.
