The birthday card aisle has two settings. For men: golf. A cartoon man golfing, a pun about golfing, the unshakable industry conviction that every male past thirty is legally required to golf. For women: roses, a watercolor teacup, and a font so swoopy it needs its own chiropractor. Between them sits the "over the hill" section, which has been making the exact same tombstone joke since the Nixon administration and remains, somehow, proud of it. We made these birthday cards as a formal objection. The people we love do not golf, or if they do, that is honestly the least interesting thing about them. They have specific flaws. They are aging in specific, documentable ways. They deserve to be roasted by name, not by demographic. So: one sharp line per card, letterpressed until the paper surrenders, foiled in gold or silver, blank inside. You supply the incriminating details — the age they're pretending to be, the thing they said at the last party — because you were there and the card company wasn't. A birthday card should sound like the people attending the birthday. Ours finally do.

Our birthday cards are designed in-house, letterpressed until the joke is physically embedded in the paper, and foiled so the roast arrives looking like an award. We don't do demographic humor — no golf, no wine-mom, no over-the-hill tombstones. We do the sharper thing: a line that works because you'll finish it with details only you know. Twenty-plus years of pressing paper has taught us this much — the cards that get kept are the ones that get laughed at first.
