Scented Candles

Chive Studio's scented candles run two lines under one roof: Shido, the vegan botanical collection named for the flowers in its scents, and Modern Fling, the double-wicked soy candle range named for pet names. All coconut-soy wax, all hand-poured, all deliberately over-scented — and all boxed to be given.

Scented candles divide into two questions: what should the room smell like, and who is the candle for. This page holds both answers. Shido is the botanical line — six flower-named scents, entirely plant-based, the easy vegan gift. Modern Fling is the soy candle range — pet-named, deliberately over-scented, and double-wicked so one jar fills a living room. Same studio, same coconut-soy wax, same refusal to whisper.

Every candle on this page is hand-poured into an eight-ounce glass with two wicks, which is the
mechanical difference between a candle you smell across the room and one you smell only at the
nightstand. Browse the full range below, or go straight to the line that fits the person: the botanicals for the gardener and the vegan, the pet names for everyone who has ever been called one.

Luxury candles

Luxury candles are usually priced on the jar and the brand; these are built on the burn. Coconut-soy wax
carries fragrance better than paraffin and burns cleaner, the double wick uses the whole wax pool instead of tunnelling past half of it, and the fragrance load is set above industry standard. The luxury is that the candle performs every hour it is lit — the glass is just the container it happens in.

Candle gift set

A candle gift set from this page assembles itself: pick a Shido botanical for the recipient who reads labels, a Modern Fling for the one who wants the room filled, or pair either with a greeting card from the same house and the gift is complete. Everything ships in packaging deliberate enough to hand over unwrapped— the box was designed as part of the present.

Every candle on this page is made by Chive Studio — designing in Toronto since 2004, hand-pouring coconut-soy candles across two lines, and wholesaling to thousands of shops worldwide.

Frequently asked questions about scented candles

What are clean burning candles?

Clean burning candles produce minimal soot and smoke — a function of the wax, not the brand story. Coconut-soy wax burns cooler and cleaner than petroleum paraffin, and cotton wicks add no lead core to the flame. Every candle on this page uses that combination, which is why the room afterward smells like the fragrance rather than like something recovering from it.

What are long lasting candles?

Long lasting candles come down to wax chemistry and wick design: coconut-soy wax burns at a lower temperature than paraffin, consuming more slowly for the same volume, and a double wick spreads the melt pool so no wax is stranded on the walls of the jar. Both lines here are built on that pairing — the candle ends when the wax is genuinely gone, not when the tunnel gives up.

What makes hand poured candles better?

A person rather than a machine decides when each pour is done — hand poured candles get their wax temperature, fragrance mix, and fill judged individually, which is what keeps the fragrance load consistent from the first burn to the last. Every Shido and Modern Fling candle is hand-poured. The difference is not romance; it is quality control with hands on it.

What are good candle gifts?

Candle gifts work when the candle matches the person rather than the occasion — a botanical Shido for the recipient who checks ingredients, a Modern Fling pet name for the one who would rather laugh at the label. Both arrive gift-ready in their own packaging, both fill a room, and both survive the moment of unwrapping without needing anything added. The name does the charm. The scent does the rest.

What are designer candles?

Designer candles are designed twice: once for the shelf, once for the burn. This page's candles come from the studio designing in Toronto since 2004 — the same house behind the ceramic flowers stocked in museums — and the design work runs from the glass and label down to the double-wick engineering that determines how the candle actually performs. The shelf appeal is the invitation. The burn is the argument.

What are good handmade candles?

Handmade here means hand-poured: wax blended, scented, and poured by a person, jar by jar, rather than run off a filling line. Good handmade candles pair that care with materials worth caring about — coconut-soy wax, cotton wicks, fragrance loads set above industry standard. Both lines on this page qualify. The hands are the process. The performance is the proof.

What are non toxic candles?

Non toxic candles avoid the three usual offenders: petroleum paraffin wax, lead-core wicks, and synthetic
dyes. The candles on this page use coconut-soy wax, cotton wicks, and no synthetic dyes — the combination that burns without depositing soot on the walls or the air. What the flame releases is the fragrance you chose, which was the entire point of lighting it.

What are natural candles?

Natural candles start with plant-derived wax — here, a coconut-soy blend — and keep the ingredient list short from there: cotton wicks, botanical and fine-fragrance oils, glass. Nothing on this page uses petroleum wax. Natural is the material choice; the over-scented fragrance load and double wicks are what make the natural candle also the effective one.
