Some coral colonies spread across a reef for meters. The Azure Tube Coral has chosen to be compact. Measuring 3.5 by 2 inches, it is a simplified ceramic cluster of tubes glazed in a clear, sky-leaning blue, and one of the smallest pieces in the Coral collection. A single screw holds it, and it fits into gaps on a gallery wall that larger pieces cannot reach. It needs no water, no light schedule and no particular encouragement. It is small, it is blue, and it is very comfortable with both facts.

How to hang & display

Wall hanging

Works on drywall, plaster, or wood panelling. Drive a small screw at a slight upward angle, leaving the head proud of the wall. Slide the keyhole slot on the back over the screw head, adjust to level. Sits flush — no visible hardware.

No stud? No problem. A drywall anchor rated for the weight works fine.

Displaying a collection

Lay everything out on the floor first. Start with your anchor piece, build outward. Keep 2–3 inches between each piece and aim for the centre of the whole arrangement to land around eye level. Use painter's tape on the wall to map positions before committing to any screws.

Table & shelf display: Equally beautiful propped on a shelf, mantle, or side table. Pair with books, candles, or a small pot.

  1. Dust with a soft dry cloth or soft-bristled brush. Do not use wet cloths or liquid cleaners.
  2. Keep away from direct moisture, steam, and outdoor conditions. Indoor display only.
  3. Handle by the base or stem — avoid pressure on individual petals.
  4. If storing, return to original gift box with foam insert for protection.

Editing Down to the Essentials

The Azure Tube Coral is one of the smallest pieces in the Coral collection, and that size shaped every decision about it. A cluster of tubes at this scale had to be simplified, with fewer openings and slightly thicker walls, so the form would still read clearly at a distance instead of turning into texture. We tested more complicated versions first and kept removing tubes until each remaining one had space around it. Azure was chosen for its brightness, a clear, sky-leaning blue that holds its own on a wall even at this size and matches the bright water most people picture when they think of a reef. The glaze pools a little deeper in each opening, so the tubes keep their definition. It is a good first piece, or the small accent that finishes a larger arrangement.

Small Pieces, Big Edits

The smallest pieces are often the hardest, something Chive has found across pieces at many scales since 2004. Detail that reads beautifully on a large piece turns into noise at a smaller size, so small pieces get edited more aggressively than large ones, with elements removed until what remains is legible at a glance. The Azure Tube Coral went through more of that editing than most. Smaller pieces are also designed to work as connectors, filling the gaps between larger forms on a gallery wall and making a scattered arrangement read as one group. A bright color helps a small piece do that job without disappearing.
