The Succulent Blue is a Classic Collection ceramic wall flower — blue, handmade, permanent, and requiring no water, no soil, and no follow-up. The succulent is the most self-sufficient thing you will ever own. It requires almost no water, almost no attention, and has absolutely no interest in your emotional availability. Blue is the color it chose for this particular incarnation, which is the color of distance, of things that do not need you to survive, of a text that has been read and not responded to. The Classic Collection is the original Chive line, built from onward, and the Succulent Blue has been in it long enough that it no longer needs to explain itself to anyone.

How to hang & display

Wall hanging

Works on drywall, plaster, or wood panelling. Drive a small screw at a slight upward angle, leaving the head proud of the wall. Slide the keyhole slot on the back over the screw head, adjust to level. Sits flush — no visible hardware.

No stud? No problem. A drywall anchor rated for the weight works fine.

Displaying a collection

Lay everything out on the floor first. Start with your anchor piece, build outward. Keep 2–3 inches between each piece and aim for the centre of the whole arrangement to land around eye level. Use painter's tape on the wall to map positions before committing to any screws.

Table & shelf display: Equally beautiful propped on a shelf, mantle, or side table. Pair with books, candles, or a small pot.

Ceramic flowers, original designs by Chive and in 200+ institutions worldwide

The Monterey Bay Aquarium has stocked Chive ceramic flowers for years. Our pieces sit in their retail spaces alongside the science and the conservation work, which tells you something about the kind of object this is. The succulent in blue is the one that most consistently surprises people who thought they knew what a succulent looked like. It has no interest in your attention. It does not need your water. The aquarium stocks it. That is the kind of endorsement a succulent earns by minding its own business.

Frequently asked questions

What does a succulent mean as a gift?

A succulent as a gift says something specific about the recipient: they are capable, self-sufficient, and unlikely to need reminding to water anything. The ceramic version in blue takes this further — it requires nothing at all, which is either very practical or a philosophical statement, depending on how you read it.

How does a ceramic wall flower hang?

One screw. Ninety seconds. Every Classic Collection ceramic wall flower has a keyhole mount on the back — hang it on a single screw the way you would hang a picture frame, except the result weighs less and lasts longer. No brackets, no anchors, no second trip to the hardware store. The Succulent Blue, at 12 inches, has the presence to anchor a wall on its own.

What is a good gift for someone who has everything?

A ceramic wall flower is the correct gift for someone who has everything, because it is the thing they did not know to ask for and cannot easily acquire on their own. The Succulent Blue is permanent, requires nothing, and goes on the wall rather than into a drawer. It does not need a shelf, a vase, a charge, or a follow-up. It simply hangs there and is exactly what it is.

What is a good retirement gift for a woman?

A retirement gift for a woman should be beautiful, lasting, and entirely for her — not useful in the household-task sense, just genuinely pleasurable to look at every day. That seems about right.

Has the Succulent Blue been informed that succulents are supposed to be green?

It has not been told this and would not find it relevant. The Succulent Blue operates on a different timeline from the other flowers — one that does not include unsolicited feedback, schedule adjustments, or emotional availability. It is blue because blue is what it is. This question has been read. A response is not currently planned.

What is a good plant for a bathroom wall?

A ceramic wall flower is the correct plant for a bathroom wall — it requires no humidity, no drainage, and no worry about what the steam is doing to the soil. The Succulent Blue in blue hangs on one screw, stays there permanently, and looks exactly as good on the fifteenth year as it does on the first day.

What is maximalist wall decor?

Maximalist wall decor is the philosophy that a wall should hold as much as it can support without becoming overwhelming — which requires either very good individual pieces or a very clear organizing principle. The Succulent Blue from the Classic Collection works in both directions: interesting enough on its own, and considered enough to anchor a larger arrangement.

What is the traditional 9th anniversary gift?

The traditional 9th anniversary gift is pottery — which is ceramic, which is exactly what this is. The Succulent Blue from the Classic Collection is handmade ceramic, ships in a Chive gift box, and hangs on one screw. It is the correct material for the correct anniversary, and it will still be on the wall at the twentieth.
